Summary Of Just Lather That's All
Just Lather, that’s all is a short story written by Hernando Tellez. It is about the conflict between a rebel disguised as a barber and an executioner in a war-torn-shop. Having been secretly affected by the harsh punishments of the executioner and his army, the barber finds himself conflicted about having Captain Torres’s life in his hands. While shaving Captain Torres’s beard, the barber decided to spare him his life because he is against murder, but is worried that his people may take him for a coward rather than merciful. At the end of the story we find out that the Captain knew that the barber was a rebel the entire time he was in the shop; he then calls the barber out for not being strong enough of a person to kill him and walks out.

The definition of a coward is one to show fear, the barber shows he is a coward by being afraid, seconding guessing himself, and showing weakness. When the captain walks into the barber shop he begins to quiver on the spot, therefore showing how fearful his is of the captain. For example “When I recognized him I started to tremble.” The barber without a doubt is showing terror. When you’re brave and courageous you never doubt yourself and stick to your guns, however the barber does not. In other words, when you plan on doing something you should never back down. On the other hand the barber does back down. For instance, “But what would I do with the body? Where would I hide it? I would have to flee…” Here he begins to think about what would happen if he did kill the captain and therefore leading him to not kill. In addition, the barber says “No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer.” In other words he is trying to say he doesn’t deserve to be the one to kill him and be called a murderer. Finally, the barber gives off vulnerability by thinking of reducing the amount of pain and suffering to the captain. For example, the barber thinks to himself “I'm sure that one solid stroke, one deep incision, would prevent any pain. He wouldn't suffer.” Caring for the enemy and trying to minimize the amount of pain they will have is true acts of a coward. In conclusion being fearful, doubting oneself, and giving off weakness is a sure fire sign of a coward.…

The description of Just Lather, That’s All by Hernan do Tellez makes the setting more believable. The author is able to use descriptive language too effectively to describe the weather, the auditory and the imagery sense. Tellez used auditory imagery to express the thought of the barber. As the barber went back and forth contemplating weather to kill Captain Torres, the barber thought, “I could cut his throat just so- zip, zip” (Tellez 50).…

4Allthough each of these short stories speak about the actions of the protagonists; this paragraph will analyze the difference between the two. 5Each character in both story are given a problem, and they act very differently. 6Gawaine plays a young dragon slayer in “The Fifty-First Dragon”, and from the fact that he can slaughter a living creature in a single, mocking swing of his sword, we can tell that he doesn’t care for the well-being of the dragon, and only focuses on his fame and glory that exceeds from his sinful act. 7In the story “Just Lather, That’s All” the Barber thinks long and hard before deciding whether to, or not to murder the cruel general that sits comfortably in the barber chair, within the barber’s reach. 8Nervousness proves whether the person has the ability to commit a hasty decision, or to back away slowly. 9Gawaine swings his sword and slices through each dragon without any fear at all. 10Gawaine is evidently different than the Barber whose hands evidently tremble from his anxiety. 11Although the Barber would seem timid and frightened, we can tell that his personality helped him make the right choice by not killing the General.…

Ioannides and Tellez both talk about how altered our decisions become at times of war, and how the unexpected conquers the expected and it is then that the truth of one’s identity (protagonist) is unveiled. In Gregory “When the order came, it was like a thunderbolt” (Paos Ioannides 3), the author wishes to emphasize on the irony of the friendship of an inmate and the soldier, and how he gets to choose between friendship and duty to his country. This quote highlights how reality struck the author because he knew it was a do or die situation. In the end he does what he thinks is best for him and shoots Gregory. When the author says “You see, this Gregory was such a miserable little creature, such a puny little thing, such a nobody…” (Paos Ioannides 2), he’s portraying his altered side, his true reality because later in the text he declares Gregory as his friend. He tries to justify his actions by altering his thinking about Gregory. In Lather and Nothing Else the protagonist deals with the situation in a similar yet different way. The quote “you came so that I could shave you. And I’m doing the job honourably….I don’t want to stain myself with blood. Just lather, and nothing else” (Hernando Tellez 3), shows how the author analysed the consequences of killing the captain which costs him his career- his most valued possession, hence he chose his career over rebellion, though the captain was his enemy, he could have simply avenged the deaths of his fellow rebels and he wouldn’t have to live with the fact that he could have killed…

The barber would have killed Captain Torres for the sake of the revolutionary group he was part of. However, there were risks that came with killing the captain: "I would have to flee, leaving all I have behind, and take refuge far away, far, far away. But they would follow until they found me." (Tellez, 16) Jack on the other hand, was mainly driven with the force of his own selfish reasons to be highly regarded among the boys, to get another chance at being leader. As seen in these stories as well as in human nature, a selfish motive is usually more motivating than a motive to help others; Jack decided to kill, while the barber decided not to because of the risks that were…

In the book, being a barber is the protagonist’s profession and desire. I can connect this to myself because I have a strong desire to play the piano 6 years ago, and I continue to do it today. This shows the similarities between the story and the experience in myself, by showing the type of passion that you are interested in and doing an activity that you are proficient in. In the quote, “I was also a conscientious barber, and proud of the preciseness of my profession, and this four days growth of beard was a fitting challenge,” this shows how the protagonist (the barber) expressed his enjoyment in shaving people and being a barber by using the words “proud”. Also, he expresses how he is dedicated into correctly shaving people, as well not showing any complaints of any challenges that he faces, which proves that it is his profession that he enjoys by not backing out in any circumstances. This also shows that he had no intention of killing Torres, even if he was faced with a decision in the future since shaving people is much more important in his life. In my experience with the piano, this shows that it is unlikely that I would play another instrument instead of the one that I had played for several years if given the decision to, which shows the amount of desire when playing the…

“Just Lather, That’s All” tends to set confliction in the minds of its readers. “The day he ordered the whole town to file into the patio of the school to see the four rebels hanging there, I came face to face with him for an instance. But the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the face of the man who had directed it all, the face I was about to take into my hands,” said the barber. This quote shows the barber’s realization and emotion over the situation. “On the other hand I, with his razor in my hands, stroking and restroking his skin, trying to keep blood from oozing from these pores, can’t even think clearly. Curse him for coming, because I’m a revolutionary and not a murderer. And how easy it would be to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he? No! No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer. What do you gain by it? Nothing,” he thinks. This shows precisely the confliction and confusion of the barber’s emotions on the subject of murder.…
