Summary Of Lauryn Hill's Mystery Of Iniquity
Imagine smooth tunes, imagine sophistication mixed with just enough ruggedness, imagine a soulful and heart wrenching voice; the voice talks about it all falling down and you don’t want it to because then you’ll never hear that voice again, the voice of the legendary Lauryn Hill. Now imagine the mood changing swiftly, the strumming of her guitar becoming more erratic, her voice becoming more powerful, more forceful and serious, she says you can’t handle the truth in a courtroom of lies. You would be lying if you said you didn’t rethink our justice system after listening to her lyrics. Lauryn Hill’s Mystery of Iniquity captures the essence of the role of capitalism within the Anthropocene by highlighting the iniquities that exist within the justice system and the different socioeconomic classes. Mystery of Iniquity makes a political statement about the overall corruption that is present inside of our court systems. She offers harsh criticism to the normal courtroom customs such as swearing on the bible and providing the defendant with a court appointed lawyer. She does this using a diverse vocabulary as well as clever rhymes. This makes her message even more appealing and helps you retain it for future reference. There has always been this idea of the American dream and that anyone can get there but truthfully it is easier said than done. There are other factors that play a role in this. American culture has become so far from being “one with nature” that the American dream is the epitome of pollution and world degradation. We buy toxic paint for our white picket fences and cut down trees for our yellow houses. However, this dream is unattainable to some but regardless they still chase it.     In the book, The Epic of America, written in the year of 1931, author James Truslow Adams was the first to give a “clear” definition of what the American Dream really is. He stated that the American Dream is “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” (Truslow 214). Although his definition describes what the American Dream is, it does not explain what everyone’s American Dream is throughout the world.
