“Life Under a Chief Doublespeak Officer” is the essay that I have chosen. The purpose of this essay is to explain how doublespeak is used. It shows how some words can be changed to seem like it something important when it is not. William Lutz wrote about how a band could call a robbery just a authorized transaction. A bank in Texas did this as their ATM was stolen. (Lutz, para. 3.) The descriptive writing pattern used by this writer is specific language. I feel that he uses this pattern extremely well. Lutz choice or words and the way In which he described situations made it clear to understand and visualize the situations he described. Lutz wrote out a few terms that that companies use to lay off individuals that stuck out to me. He
said they use: workforce adjustment, headcount reductions, and deselected. I guess because I am a full time worker and not just a student these terms really stuck out to me. The way he writes about how they try to word it so it is not called getting fired fascinates me. I never realized just how much compaies work so they don’t have to use the words fired or lay off. He talks about how they use “workforce adjustments," “headcount reductions," "census reductions”. (Lutz, para 11.) I just find it astonishing how people are able to just fire some people with a couple of words and not have to answer to anyone about it. From reading this piece I have learned a lot about word choice. I have learned about how to be creative with the way I say something. I am hoping that I am able to incorporate this into my essay by being more creative in the way I say some things to grab my readers attention. This essay was easy to follow along with and understand.
