Summary Of Living With Reciprocity By David Kung
In the essay Too Many Bananas, Not Enough Pineapples, and No Watermelon at All: Three Object Lessons in Living with Reciprocity by David Counts, there is a misunderstanding between cultures about the rules of sharing. The events in David Counts's essay were humorous anecdotes about fruit. Unfortunately for the !Kung people, differing ideas of sharing can sometimes be catastrophic for a culture. The previous social interactions of the !Kung became unworkable when they were forced to switch to a cash-based society.

Egoism is the act of behaving self-interestedly, and is perceived as a negative trait even though it can be seen as a tool of survival (Rosenstand, 2003: 131). However, there is an opposing theory, which is altruism. Altruism is defined as a concern for the welfare of others and is considered virtuous (Rosenstand, 2003: 150). We are often made aware of heroes who risk their lives for others and these heroes inspire many. We are encouraged to be altruistic, early in our lives. Nonetheless, one notices how altruist acts usually include rewards, even if it’s just a simple thank you. This leads to questions such as, does true altruism exist, or do people always have a motive as to why they perform altruistically?…

I have written this paper to better understand the ! Kung San tribe. After reading Robert Borshay Lee’s article “Eating Christmas in the Kalahari”, my findings are that d Status is defined as “a term used by sociologists to refer to any of the full range of socially defined positions within a large group or society” (Schaefer, 100). Different statuses in a society invoke different reactions. For instance, in America the president is the highest status that a person can have.…

At no time he thought that the problem might be something within himself “Are you out of your mind?” p 15. When he realized the joke “Yes, when a young man kills such meat he comes to think himself as a chief or a big man. And he thinks of the rest of us as his servants or inferiors […] so we always speak of his meat as worthless” p 17, Lee remained shocked: it was about humility. What Christmas meant to him, “With us Whites […] Christmas is supposed to be the day of friendship and brotherly love” p 16, did not have the same meaning for the villagers. The culture that Lee shared for years with the Kung Bushmen suddenly appeared unknown, unfamiliar to him.…

The story” The lady and The Tiger?” written by Frank Stockton mainly talk about a princess who falls in love with a low station man, but under the king’s barbaric control, the young man was considered a criminal. So the king gave the young man a chance to choose: the tiger or the lady. It also means dead or live with another woman. The story didn’t give us an exact ending. In my opinion, the story is combined with generosity and selfish. In this story, generosity can also be selfish. Sometimes, a choice looks generous on the surface, actually it was selfish on the inside. There are many examples to prove this.…

Its a society in which morals and ethics do not apply because it was considered as a weakness. Its a society where men treat one another like animals. In the essay “The Iks” by Lewis Thomas, he discusses how each selfish individual Ik displays similar characteristics as groups in general. Though this theory is extreme, it is true. This can be seen in small groups such as gangs to larger societies such as nations.…
