The first major charateristic used throughout this short story is, identifiny huan traits from their environment. By the way the characters spoke within the story shows that they were from a poor society. “Well, it was dis way, Pete, see! I was goin’ teh lick dat Riley kid and dey all pitched on me.” Jimmie and Maggie, who were two kids from the story, had to live in a bad environment because of their parent’s interactions with each other, which led to them learning to act that way. “The woman screamed and shook her fists before her husband’s eyes.” As you can see, you can easyily figure out someone’s backgrounds just on by the way someone acts. Jimmie and Maggie both losses theri indivituatitly by inheriting their way of living from their parents. Jimmie also lost his individualtiy by hating others who had more than him, just like his father use to do before he past away. “He maintained a belligernet attitude toward all well-dressed men. To him fine raiment was allied to weakness, and all good coats covered faint hearts.” Jimmie’s father was jealous of others who had better than him and eventually Jimmie felt the same way. He felt as if everyone should share
