Summary Of Me Talk Pretty One Day By David Sedaris
“Me Talk Pretty One Day” is an essay by David Sedaris in which David moves to Paris in order to learn a new language. I learned that when starting something new or for the first time, you will struggle, but as you practice it will get easier eventually. David describes learning a brand new language and dealing with a harsh teacher a big challenge. However, at the end after David finally began to understand French, the world opened up to him and he overfilled with joy. He struggled, but he didn’t give up and he put effort into learning French. I learned that sometimes when things are tough in life, it’s important not to give up and keep trying because it will get easier at the end.

For example , in the text it stated that Victor’s English teacher asked him to provide a noun his response was “Teresa.” (para 24)This was embarrassing, since some of the girls giggled because they knew that Victor had a crush on Teresa. This is when Victor should have learned to think before you reply and not to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind he was just focused on Teresa not noticing what was happening around him. Another, embarrassing moment Victor had was when he pretended he knew french however, when Mr.Bueller(his French teacher) started speaking to Victor in French he did…

The author includes gibberish in some of the conversations to show just how much French he knew and make the story relate to people taking a different language for the first time. The tone of this except is changed from the beginning of the story from worried and intimidated to a more happy tone when he finally understands what the teacher…

The essay “Mother Tongue” describes a writer who grew up with a mother of Asian origin and the limitations created by her mother’s speech. The author, Amy Tan, defines her mother’s English as “broken” and that it created communication barriers. For example, when Tan’s mother would need to call her boss about work, she would rely on her daughter to make the phone call and use proper english. When Tan decided to go into English in college, it seemed foolish since she was more skilled in math and science. The author also mentions how not everyone’s speech is the same, but that is not a bad thing. Tan decided to start writing fiction, and write a book in a way her mother would comprehend. Though the writing was harshly critiqued, Tan knew she…

In the story “Seventh Grade,” Victor, the main character, learns that persevering to achieve something can lead to embarrassing moments that can at first make you feel like a fool, but later on it can become something great through his embarrassing moments. The author illustrates this point when he states, Mr. Bueller asked if anyone knew French. Victor raised his hand, wanting to impress Teresa. The teacher beamed and said, “Tres bien. Parlez-vous francais?” Victor didn’t know what to say. Victor felt all eyes staring at him. He tried to bluff his way to out by making noises that sounded French (Soto 42-43) He looked sheepishly at the teacher, who was erasing the board, then widened his eyes in terror at Teresa who stood in front…

He went there with hopes of learning the language, but is seemed to have trouble around every turn. He finds himself struggling to even understand what the instructor is saying as she gives the first day instructions to the class. He took some French before leaving New York, but still feels lost as the teacher continues to spout out instruction. “Me Talk Pretty One Day” shows how hard it is to be a foreigner coming in trying to pick up on the language of the land and is a ridiculous argument because the language barrier is something people must overcome every day when they come to America. One Voice by Susan Madera is a story that I can very well relate to. Here we see how Madera struggles with her form of speech, because she speaks a language she calls “neighborhood” which she has acquired growing up. This does not affect the fact that she is an exemplary writer. “The language that I picked up on the streets was a part of me but as I grew up I wanted to get as far away from it as possible”(78); this shows that through various stages of her life, Madera has had experiences that have made her form of speech a burden to her. It is something that she is not proud of, and she considers it as a disadvantage in her life that she has to rid herself from. Her speech literacy was acquired involuntarily from her environment, her neighborhood.…

Growing up Susan G. Madera knew two languages: English and the neighborhood. She refers to neighborhood language as the language that everyone spoke in Little Italy, Manhattan, the neighborhood that she grew up in. When she went to study at school she was teased because of the language she spoke. It wasn’t proper English that everyone else spoke. She used improper grammar, and was many times teased because of that fact. This has greatly affected her in the future. Even one of the professors at Brooklyn College has made her life miserable when Madera has attended his class, because of the fact that she did not speak proper English. Despite this fact Madera had a successful career because she is a great writer and that helped her become better at speaking as well. We should never let anyone discourage us in finding our true selves. Madera’s story happens to be a great example why this is true.…

At the beginning of my French classes, my thoughts were that it was going to be hard but it wasn't. My Spanish knowledge helped me gain control of the language quicker. It was challenging, but nothing I couldn’t overcome. Whenever I needed help, I would ask my French teacher or classmates for clarification on what I was struggling with. In other words, I love learning and every little thing that I learn becomes part of who I am. Learning French was an amazing opportunity that my school gave me. This relates to the person that I am because, I love interacting with people and learning things from them, for example their likes and dislikes, where they come from, and getting to know the variety of people that live on this planet because we are all human but we aren't the same. We are all different in our own little ways, so being able to speak with other people who speak English or Spanish or French in my opinion is an enormous…
