When the priest got there he saw it was not a tramp but the Gringo did not want to confess his sins he wanted to use the priest so he could get out of the hut. This is interesting how the Gringo when he is dying he sends the mestizo for a priest so they can hear his sins, but he lied because he wanted a person to get him out of there this shows the limits of a criminal. “You take my gun, father. See what I mean? Under my arm.” “I haven’t any use for a gun.”(188) Since the Gringo knew that the priest was also running away, he asked him if he could help him get away but the priest refuses and the Gringo dies. and talks to him, it seems that every time the Lieutenant tried to make an argument, the priest would agree.
The Lieutenant hated the Church because it would take a lot of advantage of the poor people and surprisely the priest agreed.”The Church was poor, the priest was poor , therefore everyone should sell and give to the Church.”(193) They both agreed that the world was corrupt and full of sins. The Lieutenant takes the priest to the station and he goes to look for Padre Jose and asked him to come to the police station to listen to the confession of the priest who is going to be executed the next but he refuses. In this part it shows how Padre Jose cared about himself because he did not want to listen to the priests confession. Instead the priest did help when he was asked. The priest is getting ready and he keeps drinking the bottle of brandy that the Lieutenant gave to
him. He is not worried anymore of his soul. He regrets the opportunities in life that he could of have chosen. He thinks only about his daughter and prays to God to save her.”I have committed fornifiaction” which means sexual intercouse between people not married to eachother. “I have laid with a woman.” (207)He thought of Maria there. “As the liquid touched his tongue he remembered his child, coming out of the glare: the sullen unhappy knowledgeable face.” He said “ Oh God help her, I deserve it, but let her live forever.” (207-208)
The end of this book finishes in three parts. Mrs. Fellows lays sick in bed and her husband Mr. Fellows attends her. They do not mention that their daughter Coral Fellows dies because it hurts them to say it. El Jefe is Mr.Tench’s patient. Mr.Tench gets a letter from his wife saying that she found religion and that she forgave him but wanted to divorce then he saw how they killed the stranger which was the priest and he decides that he will leave Mexico for good. “ This time he was going to clear out, clear out for good.” (217) Mr.Tench finally decides to leave and go and look for his wife that has not seen in twenty years.
The woman finishes telling the story of Juan to his children and the boy whose name was never given asks if the priest was executed today like Juan. Her mother say yes and they go to sleep. That night the boy has a dream about the priest but it is interrupted by another priest who was also running away and asking for shelter “If you would let me come in the man said with an odd frightened smile, and suddenly lowering his voice he said to the boy, I am a priest.” (222) When the priest went to the boys house and say he was a priest left me wondering where he was coming from and if he was going through the same at the other priest that was killed.
