Summary Of My Brother Sam Is Dead
The unit that I am preparing is to analyze Christopher and James Lincoln Collier’s (1974) My Brother Sam is Dead. My Brother Sam is Dead is set from 1775 to 1779 during a very volatile and complicated period of the American Revolution; it was not clear which side would win the war. As the story unfolds, the consequences of the war prove devastating to the Meeker family: the rebelliousness of Tim’s brother, Sam, and the pacifist politics of Tim’s father, Life, result in the ironic deaths of both men. Their deaths symbolize the atrocities and unfairness of war. The goal of analyzing this text is to connect students’ critical skills to both history and literature. To aid this, developing a solid foundation in background knowledge is key.

It is about Sam Meeker, a young man who wants to enlist into the Rebel army and his younger brother Tom, who admires Sam for his bravery and courage. Both of their parents were completely against his decision to fight for the rebels, and many of their neighbors and town citizens were against the rebels. After reading the book My Brother Sam is Dead, I realized the plot of the book wasn’t what I expected. Judging by the title, you’d think the book is about a guy named Sam, but it’s really about his brother, Tim. The story takes place during a period of war, and Tim, as the narrator, has to witness his father and brother disagree over which side they are on, the Loyalists or the Rebels. Disobeying his father, Sam goes to war to fight the Loyalists, and Tim is stuck at home worried about his brother, but also admires his brother for his bravery. The war had a huge effect on Tim’s personality. As the book goes on, Tim grows up due to the situations war put him through. Tim has grown up immensely throughout the book by gaining responsibilities,…

This book begins with Sam Meeker, Tim Meeker's admired older brother, arrives in uniform at the Meeker tavern one rainy April evening in 1775. "We've beaten the British in Massachusetts," Sam exclaims, beginning a fight with Father, who is staunchly loyal to the English government and king. Sam explains to the people around the table how the Minutemen lay a surprise attack on the British "Lobsterbacks" in Lexington. Sam basks comfortably in all the attention. Father asks him a series of skeptical questions, including who fired the first shot. Sam does not know who fired first. The dinner guests, the minister Mr. Beach and several farmers, all support England, and they take Father's side, arguing with Sam about the cause, questioning whether the loss of thousands of lives is worth saving a few pennies in taxes.…

During the Revolutionary War, 4,435 patriots lost their lives due to brutal combat. This is way too many deaths for one newborn country to handle, and especially when going up against an army like England's. Just to be free from taxes, it is not worth it to go through as brutal war as it was and risk so many lives for it. The three reasons on why the authors, James and Christopher Collier, of the book My Brother Sam Is Dead, are against war are division of family, clash of generations, and principle vs. reality.…

War has been a constantly occurring event throughout history, from the strife between Homo sapien tribes to terrorists in modern society. However, what if there was some way to achieve the same ending without contentions of war?
