The Loss of the Creature Walker Percy expresses his perspective about the world in various ways. He connects his examples by making them one after another giving symbolic as losing and achieving your goal. Percy tells true experiences with people if they would ignore all the negativity and get rid of it all, life would be much better. On another hand, loss of sovereignty is what is explained by how people make situations gather up to the symbolic complex with their minds. Percy starts off with the Grand Canyon and what Garcia Lopez De Cardenas who first discovered the canyon (Percy, 298) and sees it as a beautiful sight for what it really is as what the government makes it out to be just a natural park that brings in money.…
In “My Creature From the Black Lagoon”, Stephen King compares and contrasts how children and adults handle fear, specifically in movies. His main argument is that the fear experienced by both adults and children is the result of a focus on the movie in which all emotions are fixated on the movies, and there is no logical thinking of the unrealism. In other words, their fixation allows for their imagination to dominate.…
The documentary film Blackfish which we saw in our class, was very interesting and scary. The documentary was based on a true story of a killer whale killing its trainer of many years. Till this day no know will ever know what clicked in that mammals head to turn against its trainer the way that it did. When looking at the film, it shows mostly the dangerous side of the mammal and how it was captured at such a young age, and the history it had with killing. It doesn’t really show the side of Sea World, or the trainers that train these mammals to become the best performers that they are. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite uses shocking footage and emotional interviews to present a convincing case against keeping these wild animals for human entertainment. The thesis of my essay is we should not abuse animals for our own enjoyment. Yes I too have taken my children to Sea World many times, and love seeing these beautiful sea animals, but when you stop and think one second the treatment they actual receive to become what they are today, it is just very harsh. Just like human beings, these animals too like to be respected and treated nicely. Torture will never get them to become what the trainer wanted them to be.…
In the essay The Loss of the Creature, by Walker Percy he starts off talking about Garcia Lopez de Cardenas discovering the Grand Canyon as an example of symbolic complex. Symbolic complex defined throughout the essay is describing the ideal situation and hopes one might expect during a new experience. While visiting the Grand Canyon, one might have high expectations such as a man from Boston while planning his trip. He planned a two-week trip with his family. This man falls into the trap of symbol complex by the author stating, “But it is more likely that what he has done is the one sure way not to see the canyon.” (page 298) The next concept that is brought up is recovering from symbolic complex. He goes on to share a few examples of how…
Imitation can be simply defined as an act of copying or the assumption of one’s behavior observed in others. Humans are strange creatures with the ability to imitate and cope languages or ideas that makes “us” different and can be distinguished from animals. These all describes memes, which supports individuals to explore and experience new inventions through a way of imitating. In “ Strange Creatures,” Susan Blackmore promotes the theory that a little conscious “me” is created by the memes so as to replication. She discusses memes as a replicator that can help to control human thoughts and behaviors and believes everything can be passed from person to person. Memes allows people to fit in and imitate others to what society has offered; howerver,…
After having kids many parents are struck with the realization that they don’t come with an instruction manual or any knowledge on how to nurture them into strong, successful human beings. It is all up to the mother and father to indicate what is right and wrong for their young to be involved with while growing up. With raising a child in this day and age can be a tough duty to undertake due to… In Colin Stoke’s TED talk, “How Movies Teach Manhood” his main point is about what movies are appropriate to show to young children and how they should help shape their futures. James Poniewozik speaks about this same issue but in an original way. But, while both authors show their ??? side by sharing a common concern on how kids are very much influenced…
The “Beast” was externalized through the fear embedded in their brains which developed from the imagination of the boys. According to Document A, “There are no comforting mothers to dispel the terrors of the unknown.” In other words, without the reassurance of adult…
Movies, music, and games deemed to be too violent or profane are given ratings and labels to deter parents from allowing children to experience the media. This has been done to protect the children from inappropriate or violent media, however even with these ratings in place, children still see violent or scary images in the media geared towards them. In Stephen King’s essay, “My Creature from the Black Lagoon,” he argues that to children “even Disney movies are minefields of terror” (585) and that “almost everything has scare potential for the child under eight. Children are literally afraid of their own shadows at the right time and place” (584). The fear that is instilled by these trivial and childish movies does not create mass-murderers or rapists. The images instead linger in the mind of the viewer as they age. Stephen…
In the movie Blackfish by Gabriela Cowperthwaite states killer whales should not be kept in seaworld cages and for the incidents have been reported from sea world caused by killer whales. Tilikum was the main topic in Blackfish because Tilikum caused most of the incidents happened at seaworld for the bad treatment he had received when he was first brought into seaworld in Canada. In my opinion, killer whales should not be kept at seaworld in cages because that causes them to be aggressive towards the trainers. I state that killer whales should be free from seaworld cages stopping anymore incidents happening at seaworld and killer whales should live in the wild where they are happy with their…
Alfred Hitchcock’s amazingly directed film, Psycho is known as the “mother” of all modern horror suspense film. This film makes as there were not much progression of the horror movies since 1960s, when Psycho was produced. Before when Psycho was produced, horror movies generally produced with fictional creatures such as Dracula and Godzilla. Hitchcock was also well known for breaking the conservative way of producing the horror film and he produced new subgenre of horror film called ‘Slashers Movie’ which includes famous Psycho. ‘Slahser Movie’ is defined as when the mental character murders other characters without particular reason and continues to show scenes of other characters being brutally killed. The most times, murderer uses weapons that make the murder crueler. The perfect examples of ‘Slahsers Movie’ are Scream and Halloween. Psycho’s famous shower sequence is considered as one of the most famous sequences in 20th century cinema and the shower scene is further intensified through the mise-en-scnee and music (sound). The shadow of the attacker is a mother figure holding a knife, which the mise-en-scene helps create a more thrilling climax. Also the sharp and high pitch strings of the violins, violas, and cellos create an orchestra of intensity that leads to the pivotal death of the victim, Marion.…
