Tobias Wolff’s highly accredited novel, ‘ This Boys Life’ explores truth and lies through the use of various scenarios and characters in a cliché “American dream” teenage world.…
Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” and Peter Carstair’s motion picture “September” are two compelling works that explore the poignant theme of coming-of-age. While over thirty years separate the two pieces, both texts capture the raw emotions and difficulties of innocent children growing into mature adults in an ever-changing society. These changes are portrayed in many different way, but are most prominent through the racism in their surroundings, the character’s deep personal development and their loss of innocence.…
“If confusion is the first step to knowledge, I must be a genius”, Larry Leissner. Life is full of confusion, confusion is a natural emotion that everyone feels about something in the confusion packed world we exist on. The coming of age period is when people usually experience uncertainty the most throughout their lifetime. Authors sometimes use this intense time in coming of age stories and portray it in many different ways. In the following coming of age stories the authors display the confusion of advancing to the next stages of life through exercising symbolism in their writing.…
I chose “The Catcher in the Rye” authored by Jerome Salinger because I feel it represents coming-of-age thoroughly although with a twist. Holden Caulfield, the main character, experiences the same feelings and maturing and transitioning perception of society that, mostly, any 16-year-old would. It focuses around Holden’s insight of adolescence and the way he apprehends people’s behaviour and judgements. Published and based in the 50s, the moralities have not changed much.…
In the essay, Myth of Adolescence, Alex and Brett Harris incorporate their thoughts on what they feel about what teenagers actually go through during their period of `adolescence.` They go on to compare this phase to an elephant. They say that an elephant is a powerful beast that can be restrained even by a piece of twine. According to Alex and Brett, young teens are the elephant and our twine is the concept of adolescence. Unfortunately, these low expectations end up limiting teens for no reason. Teenagers, between the ages of 13-18, are held back by society and aren't able to excel in life. The essay, Myth of Adolescence, states that the socials expectations are becoming obstacles for teens. We as teenagers, need to erase the invisible shackles…
In the direct, later on, indignant article “Endless Summer”, Rick Bragg reveals the transition from childhood to adulthood by using figurative language throughout the article. Bragg portrays that time last forever and summer is the same way. Summer feels so long to a child because they spend countless hours playing in the pool and staying out till dark. They wake up and repeat the same routine the following day. To Bragg, the transformation to an adult is very grim; because it means more responsibility. Jobs have priority and take up more time, leaving little to no free time to do the enjoyable things. Nevertheless, summertime as a kid is entertaining, but the memories will have to do because as adults, jobs take priorities in life.…
Since human beings arrived on the planet Earth, there have been few cultures that lacked the one thing which has ultimately held our species back, prejudice. Throughout history, we see how millions upon millions of people have been killed simply because one group of people believed in a different God, came from another country, or simply had a different color of skin. Fortunately, human beings hold the ability to overcome prejudice through education and dialogue between different ethnic or racial groups. Unfortunately though, human beings have often preferred to take the path towards ignorance and bigotry. Throughout her autobiography, "Coming of Age in Mississippi," Anne Moody discusses how she was introduced to the harsh reality of a culture where individuals were unwilling to live together in peace and equality.…
Brooks expresses her feelings quite vividly throughout this poem. She tells the theme by expressing how teens are out doing things that they believe earns them cool points when in all actuality, nothing good comes out of the situations they put themselves in. She expresses this pretty much thorough the entire poem. Brooks especially portrays the theme through line 7 and 8 by stating , " We due soon. "…
In this novel Matthew Quick made it a clear lesson that you should never judge a person before you get to know them. Boy 21 is about a boy named Finley. Finley loves to play basketball with his girlfriend Erin and is the starting point guard for his school. He doesn’t talk a lot because his mother died when he was young. Finley was given the job of looking after a new kid named Russ Washington. He doesn’t really want to because Russ calls himself Boy21 and 21 is Finley’s basketball number so it makes him worried. Coach wanted him to do this because he thinks Finley is a nice kid and that he and Russ will have something in common due to the fact that Russ’s parents were murdered just like Finley’s mom. Russ is also wonderful at basketball and…
Beyond the immediate, beyond being a play about coming of age and the value and nature of education, The History Boys is a play about the complexities and difficulties of being a human being. Bennett goes to lengths to explore and understand the trials and tribulations of his characters, and allow his audience too to understand the character’s troubles. It would appear Bennett’s goal is for his audience to learn and develop an understanding and empathy, not only for his characters, but also for humankind and to appreciate the intricacies of human nature.…
“The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.” - Patrick Rothfuss…
A coming of age story is a story that shows the transition of a character from a kid to an adult. The story talks about past events that lead up to their adulthood. A character in a book can be immature in the beginning. As the story continues, they become more mature. Loss of innocence is when a child recognizes different things about the world. The things that they recognize can be good or bad, but most of the time they are bad. The characters in To Kill A Mockingbird have experiences with “loss of innocence’ and ‘coming of age”. The children in the book get older, and they receive more information about the world.…

Lastly, what helps us to identify if The Catcher in the Rye is a coming of age novel, is how Holden's immature responces turned into mature responces. He always ran away from his problems but then he changed and learned how to take resposibily for his actions and care about his future by making correct actions. Holden was expelled from Pencey Prep for failing all of his classes exept English. His last day being at Pencey was supposed to be Wednesday, however, Holden couldn't bring himself to stay at the school because he believed that everyone around him is a phony. Just before he left Pencey Prep, Holden got in a huge fight with his roomate, Strandlater. Holden attacked Standlater when Standlater was brushing his teeth. Holden headed right…
