Summary Of Operation Apache Snow
1. Mission: The U.S. would start conducting Operation Apache Snow consisting of a 2,800 man sweep through the A Shau Valley. The operation was to cut off North Vietnamese infiltration from Laos to Hue and Da Nang.
2. Equipment: U.S. ground forces would be equipped with M16A1’s, M-60 machine guns, M-79 grenade launchers, hand grenades, Artillery, Close Air Support from Huey gunships, and with Air Force assets consisting of F-4 Phantoms equipped with bombs and napalm. The NVA were equipped with a variety of weaponry vesting from Russian, Chinese, German, and even American made weaponry from past wars. The NVA during the battle of Hill 937 used AK-47 Kalashnikov rifles, SKS rifle or Type 56 carbines a Chinese variant of the Russian SKS, Mosin Nagant bolt action rifles, Type 50 submachine guns, K-50Ms, RPD light machine guns, M1919 Browning Machine Gun, German MG-34’s, RPG shoulder fired rockets, 82mm Mortars. …show more content…
Terrain: The operation took place on Dong Ap Bia Mountain Range in the rugged jungle mountains of South Vietnam 1.2 miles east of the Laos border. Ap Bia Mountain is a solitary series of mountains formed and not connected to the ridges of the surrounding Annamite range. The Ap Bia Mountain stories to some 3,074 feet above sea level. Twisting down from its highest peak are a series of large cuts and draws. The largest extending southeast to a height of 3,000 feet.     There is a fairly famous painting that one of the soldiers drew that depicted two French Cyclists that accidentally crossed into a restricted area. In that area there were four American soldiers lifting what the cyclists thought was a four ton Sherman tank.     Today, America uses the M16A2 Rifle. Nearly every soldier in combat uses this weapon. It is most commonly known as the M-16. It was first brought into the Vietnam war as the M16A1. This rifle is light, functions with extremely little problems, and puts out a lot of lead. It fires in 3 round bursts or fires one bullet at a time (semi-automatic). We also use the M-4 rifle. This weapon is mainly used by the 82nd airborne division and special operation units, such as the Army Rangers. It has a short barrel and a collapsable stock which makes it perfect for close quarters combat. It fires a standard 5.56 millimeter round. This gun can be fitted with a M-203 40mm grenade launcher. What about those guys that have an incredible shot at long range? Well that’s what the M-24 sniper rifle is for. It entered the army in 1998. This rifle is bolt action which means it is a bit more accurate than lever action or semi-automatic guns. It used the M3A scope with a 10x magnification. The M40A1 is the sniper rifle recommended for the US Marine Corps. It is based on a Remington 700, it has a heavy barrel, bolt action, and it is magazine fed. It’s equipped with a 10x Unertl scope. An earlier model was put into war around 1970. The M-240 entered the war in 1997. It fired 7.62mm NATO rounds. A good thing about this machine gun it that is popular. These weapons served as a geographical benefit because of the heavy firepower they would deliver in times of serious land warfare.     A rifle and a pistol were the main two weapons. The standard issue rifle for British infantry was a Lee Enfield and the standard issue pistol was the Webley Mk IV revolver. The soldiers normally had a bayonet attached to the end of their rifle and a grenade. The most common grenade was the Mills bomb which had grooves cut into it so that when it exploded it blew metal fragments in all directions, this was good for clearing trenches. The British used canvas buckets to carry these grenades so that they could have more. Soldiers always had a gas mask on hand to defend themselves against gas attacks which became common in WWI. Soldiers also carried a shovel and wire cutters. The shovel was important if there was not enough cover in the trench or if you needed to expand the trench.
