Summary Of Our Kids Need More Sleep
The Students Need Sleep In the article entitled “Our Kids Need More Sleep”, by Valerie Erde, the author reports the benefits of changing the start time of school to a later time. Erde believes that to excel in school students need adequate sleep. Multiple studies suggest that students perform better and are more alert when they have had proper rest. Opposingly, when students do not receive enough sleep they tend to not perform as sufficiently and are more likely to be depressed. Through personal experience, from the past and currently, I agree with Valerie Erde that schools should begin at later times so that students can receive ample sleep and succeed more in school. Valerie Erde includes several pieces of evidence in her article that prove that students do perform reasonably better in schools that have changed their start time to later times. In an article from Psychology Today (Feb. 27, 2011) evidence proves that there is a dramatic decrease in the rate of car accidents for sixteen-seventeen year olds. The leading cause of death for teens are car accidents and if helping students get more sleep means that the rate of deaths would drastically change, school times should …show more content…
“In communities that make the change, or actively try to do so, oft-cited obstacles are: the ‘inconvenience’ of changing the bus schedule, the athletic schedule, or the teachers’ commutes” (Erde). Parents with this claim believe that it is crucial not to change the bus and teachers’ schedules because they are more important than students academic performance. What they do not realize is that in the long wrong the students academic success is more important to worry about because it determines their future. They have a long life ahead of them and should not have to suffer because they were not able to perform well in schools that had the option to help them perform more

Based on my own personal experience, I agree with this article. I think that sleep deprivation poses a public health issue. Not getting enough sleep affects our grades, and how well we do in school. Along with some physical disadvantages, there are some psychological as well. In the article, it said, “...neural remodeling is important for learning and memory.” The quiet time can be good for strengthening or weakening certain neurons. Sleep is a significant thing for students to get so that they are mentally and physically ready to accomplish all of the hard tasks for the next day. I gathered some details from an article that stated, “There have been many studies proving that starting school later on in the day will promote students learning…

One of the main reasons early school start times are bad for teenagers is that it makes them seriously sleep deprived. When waking up around 6 or 7 a.m., students are lucky to get making 6 hours of sleep, when they’re supposed to get about 9 hours, because they stay up doing homework or another activity they were supposed to do the night before. In the article “School Start Times and Sleep”, the author explains this topic in more detail by saying “Evidence suggests that teenagers are indeed, seriously sleep…

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

Researchers found that sleep deprivation disrupts connection between the amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex and is critical because the medial prefrontal cortex itself regulates amygdala function. Which all it means is that most sleep equals better test grades in students. This shows why schools should start later because teens will be able to get more rest and improve their grades in the classroom. Another quote, to add on, that supports this is when Achieve 3000 states, “Studies indicate that delaying school start times is a key factor in helping adolescents get the sleep they need.” These words show that delaying school times will really be a big factor when trying to improve sleep conditions for teens and adolescents. Moreover, since sleep conditions will be better for teens, it will make them better for the school day since they are able to get the sleep hours that are needed for a hard-working next day. Another quote that would show this is when the Mental Health Weekly Digest states, “The AAP recommends that adolescents receive 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep each night.…

If only they went to bed earlier, concentration and attentiveness would improve. But in their report, the researchers say the schools are ignoring adolescent biology and are “systematically restricting the time available for sleep and causing severe and chronic sleep loss.” They're not alone. The chorus of voices in favor of schools starting later had been getting louder. In August, the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) issued findings that lay out a stark and sobering picture of how sleep deprivation harms teenagers, a common problem among high school students especially, adolescents who don't get enough sleep (CDC recommends 9-10 hours) have an increased risk of being overweight, suffering depression, and struggling academically.…

High school students have more homework now. And after they did their homework, it would be too late for them to sleep. Even sometimes their sleep time starts after 12:00pm and finished at 6:00am. Students would not have sufficient time to relax from the hectic and hard study time. In article “Current school start times damaging learning and health of students” argues students should have class later. It would provide more time for students to relax and sleep.
