Paul’s experience at the front line changes him forever, and loses the urge to fight day by day. Patriotism is believed to fuel wars like this one by inspiring young men to go and fight for the love/pride of their country. These teachings do not conrispond correctly to what’s actually going to happen to them while in the fight for survival. The war was greatly extended because of the trenches. To conclude, patriotism or the love for your country contrasts does greatly contrast when compared because of the realities of war such as the ones that Paul and his friends had to face in the movie “All Quiet on the Western…

This plays a large part in the development of Paul’s relationships with his other comrades’. Paul admires Kat for these qualities, because Kat can find food, he can also calm the men after a crazy and scary fight. Paul inherits a lot of these qualities as his experiences continue; they look out for each other on the front no matter what. Latter in the book, Paul and Kat come up to this Fair Haired Recruit who is now missing his whole leg. During this, Paul wants to shoot him because he knows that this recruit/comrade is going to die if he is sent to the hospital. Paul and Kat stayed with him, and the reason of this was that Paul had comforted him during the bombardment in the creator that a bomb made. In one of the chapters, Kat is seriously injured in his leg. Paul clambers over many injured soldiers (crying for help) to get Kat (demonstrates strong relationship). Paul drags Kat to safety to a nearby ditch to stay out of the bombardment. This shows us that Paul’s developed a relationship with his comrades and that they would all die for one…

Paul used to be a very sensitive and compassionate young man, who used to enjoy and write poetry before the war. However, all of this changed, as his time in the army made him completely detached from his feelings, disenabling him to experience certain feelings and emotions in the future. Paul describes his new self by saying, “We are dead men with no feelings, who are able by some trick, some dangerous magic, to keep on running and keep on killing.” Paul learned to take his mind completely off his feelings and emotions due to the terror of the war, and the shock of several events he witnessed, and insinuates that they have been transformed into ‘killing machines’. This once again demonstrates that Paul is a character of his time, as he demonstrates intense emotional coldness. The first indication that Paul is unable to mourn his comrades is found when Kemmerich’s death brings him down, but he is still not as depressed as one would be with the death of a…

One of the reasons why Paul is considered the noblest character is because of his loyalty towards people. First, in the beginning of the novel, one of Paul’s friend Kemmerich is badly injured and had to have his leg amputated, sadly things are getting any better for Kemmerich and in the course of time he eventually dies. Paul describes himself as “wretched with helplessness” (Remarque 30), and even though he was like that, he stayed with his friend until his very last seconds. This shows that Paul was loyal to his friendship with Kemmerich no matter how hard it was for him. Likewise, when he is injured with Kropp and they are on their way to the hospital, Kropp has a fever on their way to the hospital and has to stay at a Catholic…

Considering his experience on the front Paul is feeling hopeless and doesn't believe that he can make it. After all he is broken, rootless, and weary from the war. Also he is convulsing and about to die so he is obviously feeling hopeless because he really has almost no chance to live. He is also feeling like all this time in the war is pretty pointless since he doesn't even know what the war is about. He has been out there risking his life everyday for a reason that he doesn't even…

Since he is one the intellectual path and university bound. At the beginning of the war he starts to shift to where the id becomes a driving force for how he acts. This is shown during basic training when he beats up Himmelstoss (Remarque pg 48-50). While Paul feels some sorrow for his actions he sees them as justified and he believes that he was in the right, while Himmelstoss got what he deserved due to how he treated the soldiers. After this incident Paul starts to listen to his id more and more. When he is on the front he uses the id as a way to cope with what he is seeing and what he is doing (Watson). When his primal instincts come out and he is listening to the id he does things that appeal to his pleasure seeking side. This is shown when he sleeps with the French women even though they are enemies (Remarque pg 150). When he commits these crimes (sleeping with the enemy and beating up Himmelstoss) he is not thinking of whether or not his actions are right he is just thinking about how much better they make him feel. When he felt better after he and his friends taught Himmelstoss a lesson and sleeping with the French women, were key examples of him being controlled by the id. His other actions are his defense mechanisms kicking in…

When one of Paul’s best friends Kemmerich dies, Paul is the one who has to tell his mom about the bad news. One quote that points to this is, “I must go and see Kemmerich’s mother… This quaking, sobbing woman who shakes me and cries out on me: ‘Why are you living then, when he is dead?’” (181). Paul had enough bravery to talk to his dead friend’s mother about how her son died. Paul has to lie to Kemmerich’s mother or else she would have been even more devastated than she had been when she heard the bad news. Paul was devastated when his friend died but stayed brave because he knew with war came death. An example that also proves this is, “Kat falls. We two are alone… Couldn’t I shoot myself quickly in the foot so as to be able to go with him… ‘he is stone dead’ … Do I walk? Have I feet still? … Then I know nothing more” (287-291). Paul is even more affected by Kat’s death than Kemmerich’s death. Kat and Paul were best friends and stayed together all the time. Paul did not know what to do when Kat died, he is at a loss of words, and wanted to hurt himself to stay with Kat and go wherever he went. He was courageous even though he witnessed an awful death. Although Paul is a good comrade and a smart decision maker, his best trait is that he is a brave…

Paul’s thoughts on his youth are “And even if these scenes of our youth were given back to us we would hardly know what to do.” An immense amount of Paul and other soldiers’ youth was taken away from them too soon, even if these scenes of youth were given back to them they could not regain the old intimacy with these scenes. This quote also shows Paul’s loss of innocence. Paul has become wiser during the war, but this wisdom is leaving him with no hope in his future. Paul also says that if the scenes of their youth were given back to them “...it would be like gazing at a photograph of a dead comrade…” This quote shows how much Paul misses his youth but there is no way for him to connect with it. Youth and innocence is nowhere to be found for Paul and other…

Paul seems to have a huge weak spot in his heart for his family, especially his mother. Like Paul, I share a very strong love and bond with my family. My family means everything to me, they are the most important thing in my life. I feel that Paul feels this way too, his family and war friends are basically the only things he has left in his life. Paul and I both cherish our families. Although, unlike Paul, I have never had to leave my family to protect my country, I can only imagine how it made him realize how important they are to him. Another example, I share a very strong connection with my mother. Like Paul's mother, my mother does everything for me. She makes sure all of my needs are met even when she isn't feeling well or is having a bad day. Mine and Paul's mother share and unconditional love towards…

Throughout the novel on way the theme is portrayed is when you would go home from war on leave it was hard for some soldiers to deal with. Being on leave the soldier would eventually have to go back, but they would go home and some could have a hard because some of them could have been through a lot. As they perish in the war it is shown that Paul loses some of what makes him human as said in the book “I am very quiet. Let the months and years come, they can take nothing from me, they can take nothing no more. I am so alone, and so without hope that I can confront them without fear. The life that has borne me through these years is still in my hands and my eyes. Whether I have subdued it, I know not. But so long as it is there it will seek its own way out, heedless of the will that is within me”, (Remarque 295). With nothing to comfort Paul at the end of the war. It makes him say that he is now alone, and has nothing to give, and nothing can be taken from him, and earlier in the novel when Paul is sitting on the toilet with his friends socializing about the war. Just so they could stay sane throughout the…

This came down to 80 during the middle years of the war and in the end all was left is less than 10 soldiers. But the most horrifying and hurtful thing were the face to face battles. The person coming in front of you is your enemy, it’s a kill or be killed situation, there no place to think that your both humans. For example when Paul Brauner (0) comes face to face with a situation like this, he had to kill a French soldier that too with his knife, after stabbing the soldier and while the soldier was fighting for his life Paul said “I’m sorry”. Upon checking the soldiers pockets Paul found a dairy containing the photos of the soldiers wife and child, Paul kept telling the soldier that he would visit the woman and child with whatever the soldier wanted if he was forgiven. Paul full of remorse kept saying he was sorry till the soldier took his final breath. Meaning, even if there is a place for humanity during war it only surfaces after the taking of a life. This was the biggest truth during that…
