Philip K. Dick is one of the best writers of the 20th century. He has written numerous stories and essays, most fiction, each with a plot that captivates the reader and takes them through a wild adventure, each different from the last and by the end of his books the reader craves more of his works. This author has written some of the best book in the 20th century. One of these works is “Paycheck”, which is also one of his most famous pieces of literature. In “Paycheck”, Dick uses the plot to make a commentary about current issues such as the rise of technology in society, the government, and the future of the human race. The book is about an electronic engineer who has accepted a job from a company named Rethrick Construction. The contract states that Jennings will work on the company’s secret project for two years after which he will be paid, it also states that Jennings memory of the project will be completely erased. It is implied that this sort of contracts have replaced non disclosure agreements and are common. He later wakes to find that instead of money his past self asked for odd objects as a payment. They are: a code key, a ticket stub, a parcel receipt, wire, half a poker chip, a green cloth, and a bus token. As Jennings tries to figure out why he would ask for such items in exchange for money he is taken by secret police who want to know what Rethrick is doing; Luckily one of jennings trinkets allows him to escape the police. As Jennings ponders over his past actions he discovers the truth about Rethrick Construction’s plan, to mold the future of the world, and the secret project he worked on, a time machine. Each item is proved usefulness on Jenning’s quest to uncover the truth. Jennings is aided by a receptionist at the company and she helps him hide the evidence that he uncovers. Jennings realizes that is building an army to support a revolt that would free them all from the oppressive government.
