I rate this book a perfect 10 because of the amount of interest I had while reading it. This book is written for young adult and is great for those who could relate to the same situation as Melinda. This is the kind of book that you would not want to put down once you start reading it. This book also makes a…
Stories have an extremely important effect on the lives and the characters in the novel entitled, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kid. This book is about a young 14 year old girl named Lily Owens. She has to go through life knowing that she killed her mother and that her father loathes her. She runs away form home and breaks her friend Rosaleen out of the hospital. They finally find a home, based on the clues that Lily’s mother left behind, and moves in with a family that accepts her for who she is rather than what she has to do, she can express her individuality. She gets a different look at the world and can see how stories, discrimination and family dynamics are important and valued differently. The stories in this book have three major functions in setting the stage for a good novel. They are: stories can be interpreted in many ways, stories can help people escape reality, and stories can have a lasting impact.…
Jeannette is the main character and the author. She is an extremely energetic little little girl.…
Rose’s Story is a book about the struggles one woman faced through most of her adult life, all while trying to remember her past and also while trying to raise a family of her own. The main character of the story, Rose herself, goes through the “system” so many times having to deal with one medical professional after another, social worker after social worker, case manager after case manager. The story however, starts off with Rose painting what her childhood was like: parents putting her into the system, extended stay at Chatwood (a mental hospital for children to be specific) and what life was like for her overall growing up as a kid.…

When the world is at its worst, we as humans tend to lean on literature. It gives us hope and understanding of our lives. It teaches us that we are not alone. Everything we face another is facing it with us. Works of literature hold the truth of our past, present and future. If we look at the content and theme of similar works such as “A Rose for Emily” by William Faukner, and “Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It outlines the ways of our own lives and has us connect to the stories. Despite their obvious differences in content and theme, “A Rose for Emily” and “Yellow Wallpaper” both ultimately show our own lives mirrored to them, and tell the story of the human experience.…
Gaia’s mix of ignorance and intelligence, defiance and loyalty, is the foundation for a wonderful novel. Codes, secret passageways, evil masterminds, prisons, and a touch of romance. Vivid imagery pulls the reader into the story and into Gaia’s difficult world. Not only does Gaia gain courage, confidence, and intelligence as the book progresses, but she matures dramatically as she comes to accept and realize the onerous reality of her life.…
Numerous novels and short stories contain characters who grow up and acquire knowledge throughout the story. Some characters mature into a kind and helpful role while others evolve into evil they cannot suppress. Many factors dictate how a person, or animal in some cases, will evolve or emerge in the end of the story. The people around a character and where the character lives usually determines what type of person or animal they are. The short story “On the Rainy River” shows how location helps a character grow and develop. Location plays a substantial role in how a character develops and how they learn the necessary material for growing up.…
This charming story reverses the typical roles within a children’s book. With underlying issues of stereotypes, independence and empowerment, it fills children with imagination and teaches them the importance of being strong, smart, and the realization that beauty comes from within.…
The book took you on an emotional rollercoaster filled with ups and downs. This book was filled with surprises and there was never a dull moment. The book wasn’t just enjoyable it also was meaningful. It taught me that even when you feel like nothing is going right, it will always be alright at the end. This was also said by Ran, one of Fern’s best friends with his famous quote, “All will be well” (83). I have read many books in my lifetime and I am proud to say that this book has become one of my favorites. What I feel really made this book entertaining to read was that you could really feel the emotion that each character felt. In most fictional books the emotions aren’t strong enough to feel, which makes this book stand out from the rest. The book was also very relatable in many ways, which is different from most novels I have read. One way I related to this book was that Fern was a twelve-year old girl in middle school, like I was last year and will be for a short amount of time this year. The other way that I related to this book was, they lost someone very close to them unexpectedly like I did with my dog Cookie. Charlie was very young when he died and so was Cookie. She was only four years old. This book had all the aspects of a great novel, which made it very entertaining to…
Is uniqueness and originality in a novel enough to make one great? I believe that in order for this to be the case both need to be executed well. Mark Haddon in his novel, ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time’ (‘Curious Incident’) executes uniqueness in such a way that it successfully creates empathy and understanding in the reader. This is done through the unique voice of the narrator who is a child with Aspergers. Haddon’s novel is not a narrative concerned with ‘overcoming’ a disability but rather about finding ways to co-exist with one. His novel is great because it allows the reader to step into a worldview that they wouldn’t usually have access to. He achieves this successfully through literary techniques and quotes as evidence, ultimately exploring themes regarding Aspergers and relationships. In this essay I will explore how through a unique perspective Mark Haddon has produced a great novel.…
