Summer ball by Mike Lupica, Mike Lupica is one of the authors that I half way enjoy reading his books as I don't like too read that much. So summer ball involves Danny Walker as Richie Walker's so the famous basketball guy in Middletown. The book involves Danny and a bunch of his basketball friends from middle town going out to one of the biggest basketball camps in Maine. At this basketball camp there are kids that are coming from all over the United States to show how good they are and to improve there skills. Danny and three of his basketball buddy's from his team arrive and are get settled into the camp, now at lunch time they draw the teams they are going to be on for the month they will be there. Danny's luck of the draw just happened to be Ed Powers who tried to get his dad…
After looking at the title of the poem “Ex-Basketball Player,” I assume it is about a former basketball player and his life now. After I read the poem, I find out that John Updike, the author, starts the first paragraph by describing a town. He tells about the trolley tracks and some of the stores, including a plaza and a garage. Then, the author goes on to introduce a character in the poem, Flick Webb, who helps in the garage in town. In the second paragraph, the author explains that Webb used to play for the town’s high school team, the Wizards. The author says, while scoring three hundred and ninety points, Webb was the best on the team. In the third paragraph, it tells how Webb now works in the garage shop. Sometimes he dribbles an inner tube around, but everyone remembers his past glory days on the court. As the poem comes to an end, bringing up the last paragraph, the author tells how Flicker Webb now spends his days. He hangs out at a luncheonette, plays pinball, and smokes thin cigars. Throughout this poem, there are connotations being used, an attitude portrayed, and a shift that occurs in the story being told.…
1.The dark ending was not a typically lottery but throughout the story methods of foreshadowing was used by the author, Shirley Jackson. Characters throughout the story fear the lottery nervously but the dark suspicions are confirmed when “Tessie Hutchinson shouted to Mr. Summers. "You didn't give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn't fair!"”(Jackson 5). Tessie instead of being excited for winning the lottery is extremely against winning which confirms that the lottery is nothing to be excited about. Jackson begins the story picturing the town as a the children were playing around as if nothing horrible was about to happen.…
In the book Rules, the author Cynthia Lord uses words of the wiser to help understand the theme of caring. An example of a word of the wiser, or advice, is when Catherine tells her little brother, “Wear your seat belt in the car.” and then her little brother replies “That’s the rule.”…

When it comes down to your morals, how far would you go to survive? Morals are something you live by and can be good or bad, but everybody has them. The general argument made by author Susan K. Cahn, is that in" today's' society there are women athletes who are media celebrities and a source of inspiration for many. But not long ago, being serious about sports was considered appropriate only for men and boys". Throughout the 20th century, women's increasing participation in sports has challenged our conception of womanhood. Some celebrated the female athlete as the embodiment of modern womanhood, but others branded her "mannish" which was liked to being a lesbian. Ultimately, she altered the perception of sport as an exclusively male domain. More specifically, Cahn focuses on the decades between 1920 and 1960, Cahn argues that at the beginning of the century, the debate centered on the…

As Donnie Vincent once said, "The truth is... I'm always saddened when I kill an animal. It's not remorse I feel. I know why I'm a hunter. It's out of respect." But not always do the roles stay the same, sometimes, the tides turn and the hunted become the hunters. This story is so thought provoking, because of its classic theme that anyone can become the hunted. When one looks at “Hungry Like The Wolf” by duran duran, one can see that this theme is still pertinent to today’s world because even in music they show that anyone can become the hunted. One example is when in the duran duran song, they say “Straddle the line, in discord and rhyme, I’m on the hunt I’m after you.” The use of mood, suspense and setting are expertly crafted to support the theme of The Most Dangerous Game”.…

The exciting suspense of action of Richard Connell's " The Most Dangerous Game" brings in a dark, mysterious, and evil setting as it takes us to a young man's storm of thoughts about the game of hunting and the instinct to survive. Rainsford was his name, and he was a proud hunter full of wit and reason. He loved hunting and did not care nor know about the feelings of the "huntees". He eventually meets up with another hunter named Zaroff who gives him the feeling of being hunted and changes his ideas of hunting. Zaroff was bored with hunting because his intelligence exceeded the animals' instincts. Therefore, he set his eyes on the most dangerous hunt ever, the hunt between him and Rainsford.…

It was a dreary fall day, the leaves on the ground were soaking into the mildew-covered streets and the must in the air was a sure sign that winter was going to be warm. It had been like that all week, when boredom sinks in it causes the brain to shut down. Anna and I had been watching her favorites soaps; oh yeah let's talk boredom. That was back when she used to call me friend. She was completely immersed in the love affair or whatever this weeks flavor of the month was; I managed to do what I do best, slack off. You would think a five page paper, due tomorrow, would give reason to double time; but it was way more interesting to futz with her new computer. I blame the people who created Mario, damn them it's so addicting. Shortly after Anna discovered my lack of attention to the task at hand followed by a lecture, I started to plug away at the paper.…
