Summary Of Saigon Is Gone
In the poem “Saigon is Gone,” all of the people were frightened, scared, and panicked. It states, “We hear a helicopter circling circling near our ship. People run and scream, Communists!” This shows that the people were panicking and thought that the communists had come for them. It also states, “The commander is talking: Do not be frightened! It’s a pilot for our side who has jumped into the water, letting his helicopter plunge in behind him.” The author's tone is that the people were frightened because they thought it was the communists and thought that they were going to die. It also states, “Then he adds what no one wants to hear: It’s over; Saigon is gone.” The author’s tone shows that the people were sad because Saigon, their home,

The structure of the poem consists of three different components; the first section describes the anxiety of a bombing mission. The second describes targeting the area and the third, describes flying home. This type of poem is a ballad. The poem is unique because it explains in detail, what would have happened over a series of minutes. Each stanza has its own effect, the third and forth stanzas are longer to produce the effect that when your about to die time slows down. The poem flows with rhythm all the way through it. It is a very anxiety filled piece and shows how people are affected by war.…

\ suggests that this is a very scaring and intimidating event, making the South Vietnamese people feel intimidated and scared. But they also likely felt relieved because in the same section it announces, “After years of struggle, Vietnam had been unified.” The words “years of struggle,” tell how this was a long war and it was finally over. Because of the end of a long war, the…

It is very frightening walking around the area because one can erupt and kill the soldier. “Kill him if he’s lucky. If he’s unlucky, he will be turned into a blind, deaf, emasculate, legless shell. It was not warfare. It was murder” (288). I never thought that being in the war was that intense. Everywhere people went, they have to look around for grenades, mines, guns, rifles, or even the enemy around because they would never know what or who would be shot first. One day, Caputo and his platoon planned to ambush the Viet Minh at a village near Danang. They were settled to fire at the Viet soldiers, but they saw many people trying to run away to a place to protect their children, they had their doubts. Even when they see the all these Vietnamese people, especially the innocent ones, see many deaths and injuries through the battle from their actions, all they have to do is face the truth and move on. When I read this, I thought about my family, when they tried to run away to safety. They saw many close family and friends die during the one in many battles that happened in the war, and it is tragic for me to see when they cry about it once it a…

It also mentions about life for the soldiers after the war. Physical and psychological. The physical refers to the lyrics “and what’s this rash that comes and goes”. This refers to the chemicals that were used in the war. This can refer to Agent Orange, a chemical that was used on dense jungle and bush areas to burn the foliage off the trees to find the Vietnamese soldiers tunnels and networks. A side effect of this chemical was that when used in close range could cause serious physical defects to soldiers exposed, such as cancers and genetic damage, also, a recurring rash.…

The poem starts of in what seems to be a monotone. With many simple verbs such as "picking... bringing.... rolling ... whining..." are used to depicts how days after days, it is all the same. The bodies of the soldiers, days after days are all monotonously follow the same routine and being treated in a somewhat a seemingly cold and offhanded way. These simple words are repetitive; they aim to enhance the effect of imprinting a strong image within the readers' visual imagination of the relentless pace. Forcing the readers into feeling this great injustice for these soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for their country, within the war. Yet their bodies are treated no less than animals, following a strict routine of piling up in trucks, convoys, tagging them, giving them names, and boarding them onto the jets so they can finally return to their beloved home. This is their homecoming. The tone of this particular poem is apparent here. Within the title itself "Homecoming" is irony. When homecoming is spoken of, an image of happiness, of a safe return of those who have left so long ago, a safe return back to their world, security and comfort. Yet it is subtly ironic in term that these soldiers are no longer alive, their homecoming is one of death and a great sadness for their family members.…

Operation Iraqi Freedom was a part of the Global War on Terrorism. American troops were sent into Iraq to take down Saddam Hussein, and get rid of his weapons of mass destruction, on March 20, 2003. This started the war dubbed Operation Iraqi Freedom. Operation Iraqi Freedom lasted from 2003 when forces from The U.S. and Great Britain led an invasion to take down Saddam Hussein, which was successful, to 2011 when the U.S. formally withdrew its troops from Iraq.…

Technique-Use of Language to communicate the message: The language used in this poem is very appropriate and provides a vivid image of the events that occurred in the Vietnam War. Homecoming begins by creating the setting, allowing readers to understand the mood of the poem. The first line in the first section, conveys a sense of lament…”All day, every day, they’re bringing them home”. The use of repetition of the ‘a’ sound generates a sort of repetitive and slow feeling, making the first line sound almost relentless and unending. The use of ‘they’re’, shows that the poet is not directly specifying who he is talking about, making it seem even more serious and solemn. In the second line, Bruce Dawe keeps using the words- they’re, those and them. This creates…

'Cambodia' has a deceptively simple and childlike structure. In the 1st stanza he describes a man who smiled and said goodbye, a reference seemingly to his death. If this is so, it is debatable whether this is sarcastic, given that the man would not be smiling at the time of his death, or whether it is highlighting how war can instantaneously change things for people, so that one day he was smiling and happy and the next dead. However on closer inspection, it could appear to be a man either being sent away from the battle, or a man being called up for duty possibly saying his farewells to his family. The fact that a constant theme throughout the poem is that the first line contains a survivor, while the second line depicts the dead or those who will soon be dead, adds credence to this thought as does the fact that he is…

    Saigon Review

I went to see the musical Miss Saigon on Saturday May 4th. The story was set during the Vietnam War. The main character Chris was a military general and had two wives, one being Kim and the other being Ellen. Chris and Kim met through the engineer, who worked with Chris’s friend to match them together for a one-night party. But, they kindled their relationship and got married, having a baby boy later in the play. In Act II Chris tried getting his boy and Kim out of Vietnam and into the United States, but the embassy closed and she was not able to go with him. She then committed suicide at the end of the play after she knew she would not be able to go with Chris and that he was already married to Ellen. The connections that I can make between the play and what we studied was the embassy being charged by Vietnamese citizens trying to escape the war and flee to the United States. Also, in the beginning of the play the helicopter flew over the workers’ heads, which exactly happened in one of the films we watched in class. Next, when the army attempted to draft Chris and Ellen’s boy, it was very similar to the movie also. This changes my understanding of the Vietnam War because it opens up the inside view of how stressful and tragic the situation was in Vietnam. I liked the play for the most part, mainly for the cast members such as Ellen and Thuy, but also for the amazing sets on stage such as the bedroom and the Bangkok city square. Overall, Miss Saigon was not only a great performance, but an educational play as well.…

This theme is connected mainly with Fw. He came to Vietnam to find his death. He knew there was war and he hoped that death would come to him quickly. He was tired, worn. We can feel his weariness with life, with the heat, with the whole human condition. He was pessimistic about everything. From childhood he had never believed in permanence, and yet he had longed for it. Always he was afraid of losing happiness. Phuong was happiness for him. That month, next year, she would leave him. She was young, full of life, as her sister and Pyle said, she needed children. Besides he was married and his wife refused to give him divorce. Pyle was his rival, amore eligible candidate for Phuong. He was young, polite, handsome, strong, secure, healthy, he could marry her. So, death was the only value for him. Lose life and one would lose nothing again for ever. Death was even far more certain than God, and with death there would be no longer the daily possibility of love dying. To kill a man is to grant him an immeasurable benefit. People always love their enemies. It is their friends they preserve for pain and vacuity. He knew life was cruel, full of betrayal, lie, indifference, loneliness, pain, suffering, promiscuity. He envied the officer condemned to the chance of death.…

Miss Saigon is a tragic story of love that is set in 1970’s Saigon during the Vietnam War. It is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly. The story begins in a shady Vietnamese club called “Dreamland”. The audience is introduced to Kim who is on her first day as a bargirl. Upon entering the stage, she is greeted by the Engineer who owns the club. In the back, the audience can see the other bargirls getting ready for that night and laughing at Kim’s inexperience. It goes back to the front to show U.S. Marines spending time with some prostitutes. The audience is then introduced to Chris Scott and his friend John Thomas who tries very hard to persuade Chris to spend some “quality time” with one of the girls. In this bar, there is a Miss Saigon title that all of the bar girls vie for, and the winner is given to a soldier for the night. This is the chance for the bar girls to make an American fall in love with them and take them away from Saigon. It is during this contest that Chris first sees Kim. He perceives innocence in her that all of the other girls don’t have. Although a different girl is crowned Miss Saigon, John sees that his friend liked Kim, and so he buys a room from the engineer for Chris and Kim. After some reluctance, they both enter the room. After spending a night together, Chris realizes that he has fallen in love with Kim. It is apparent that she has fallen in love with him too because when he tries to give her money, she refuses it. They both promise their love to each other and Chris tells her that he will take care of her. Chris takes some time off to spend with Kim. They get married, but during the wedding Thuy who is Kim’s cousin comes in and is very angry because he was engaged since they were thirteen. She lets him know that she does not have any feelings for him and that their arranged marriage no longer exists because her parents are dead. Chris then promises Kim to take her with him when he leaves to return to America.…
