“One moment of pain is worth a lifetime of glory”(Louis Zamperini as qtd. in goodreads). Many people will read Unbroken and see a story of a man who survived by power or knowledge which may be true, however, his survival is most likely because of the lessons he learned in his earlier life. Louis Zamperini was an intelligent and powerful man. The reason he was like that was because of his time living before his heroic incidents. Louis learned to be more compatible from his brother. He became physically fit after joining the track team to convert his energy for stealing, drinking, and partying into positive things. He gained great character traits from when his brother changed his whole persona and saving him from a down spiralling life of failure. Louis overcame fear by joining the military and finally flying in a plane, his lifelong fear. All of these helped him survive during his time of need.…
In this part of the story, Salva was running away from all the war and actually survived due to luck. According to the text, on chapter 2 page 8, it states, “BOOM! Salva turned and looked. Behind him, a huge black cloud of smoke rose, flames darted out of its base. Overhead, a jet plane veered away like a sleek evil bird. This quote clearly shows that Salva got through the war without getting hurt or killed.…
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all.” Dale Carnegie believed that perseverance could overcome even the harshest obstacles. Perseverance is inspired by a purpose, an unsatisfied drive to achieve a goal. During a cataclysmic event, only people with a purpose endure.…
Riva’s mantra, “As long as there is life, there is hope” (Sender 254) helps her to convince herself that she is in a high place in society. When Riva repeats herself over and over, perhaps she is is trying to connect with their higher self, and raise her self esteem. Interestingly enough, in Flowers For Algernon, the author’s main character, Charlie Gordon, undergoes a variety of scientific tests repeatedly, in which the he uses the language of hope and love: “The path I choose through the maze makes me what I am.”( Keyes 288.) The author's use of the maze both literally and figuratively connotes that Charlie is physically going through the maze and mentally through the maze of…
Isabelle Rosado Cuevas was born on Harry Potter’s 22nd birthday, to Elizabeth Cuevas, a hard-working public school teacher at the time, and Ramón “Moncho” Rosado, an employee at el Fondo del Seguro del Estado. Even though she shares Potter’s birthday, she wasn’t born in England, but in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and hasn’t received her Hogwarts Acceptance Letter (yet.) She was raised in Bayamón too, around the countryside with fruit trees, mountains, and even a little river near her house. Rosado describes life there as calm and soothing, even though there is the occasional party around her neighborhood that disturbs the peace. She’s lived there her whole life with her family and dog, Hemi, which they rescued when he came out of nowhere with a limp in their neighborhood.…
Many think that when times seem unbearable and severe, it is unescapable, with no possibility of ever escaping and surviving such hardships. However, I believe that people can survive almost any suffering if they have a goal to strive for, as shown in Siddhartha, Night, and Man's Search for Meaning.…
Loneliness was also shown in Salva’s story as well. This was highlighted on chapter 4, page 22, ‘’and the days became a never ending walk. Salva’s feet kept time with the thought in his head over and over. Where is my family? Where is my family? This highlight shows me how much he misses…

The factor that helped Salva to survive, was the fact that his Uncle Jewiir finds hims among the group of people. Linda Sue Park writes “‘Salva!’ the man said… ‘Uncle!’ he cried out… ‘Eh, Nephew’ he said… ‘We are together now, so I will look after you!’” (34-35). This quote shows that Salva was alone before he found Uncle Jewiir, but after he found him he felt better. Another challenge that Salva faced was when the group was walking in the desert, and Salva stubbed his toe on a rock, and wanted to give up. But, Uncle Jewiir gave Salva inspirational words, that motivated him. A quote from the novel A Long Walk to Water says “Salva stubbed his bare toe on a rock, and his whole toenail came off. The pain was terrible… He lowered his head, and tears began to flow… ‘Do you see that group of bushes?’ Uncle said… ‘You need only to walk as far as those bushes.” (Park 53-54). This quote shows that Salva was able to endure the pain of stubbing his toe and continue on with his journey because of the motivational words from Uncle Jewiir.…

There's many factors that leads to one's survival. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is a creative non-fiction story about the life of one of the Lost Boys from South Sudan during the Second Sudanese Civil War; whose name is Salva. His journey wasn't the easiest in fact he was at risk for dying at any given second. There were multiple factors contributing to his survival, his uncle, determination, and physical resources. Salva's uncle was one of the main factors. He gave Salva the will to go on so he doesn't lose sight of what's important. Traveling across the hot dense desert isn't easy. Given the circumstances survival wasn't likely. But Salva proved that with willpower the toughest challenges can be overcome. While entrenched in the ongoing war, Salva needed physical resources to survive this includes people and necessities such as food and water.
