In the book, A Whole New Mind, author Daniel Pink discusses the stimulation of each hemisphere of the brain during everyday life activities. However due to the evolving world, the once knowledgeable left hemisphere of the brain is slowing today’s humans down. In this society, humans who stimulate and use their right hemisphere of the brain will rule the future.…
In the article, “Can You Build a Better Brain,” the author, Sharon Begley, introduces some scientific research about enhancing brain’s performance and discusses how we can improve our brain through training. The author begins the article by emphasizing that brain is more complicated than muscle and scientists still do not completely understand the mechanisms of cognition; furthermore, many studies about brain enhancement do not actually show the mechanisms of brain and how doing a certain activity can help improving it. The author continues the article by talking about the studies claiming that certain vitamins and food can improve cognitive function; however, Begley points out that these studies still contain many problems that weren’t mentioned…
One fact the Mark Nichols says about the brain is “Scientist around the world are tackling age old mysteries of the brain and beginning to solve such puzzles as how memory works and why some people’s psyches can withstand the kind of horrific experiences that traumatize others. Mark Nichols also discusses how Canadian Researchers are trying to find a cure for neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Lou Gehrig’s Diseases, and show how to find out why brains cells don’t regenerate after injury. He talks about how the brain contains about 50 bill to 100 billion brain cells that make it very difficult to grasp what all the goes on in the brain.…
As I began reading this story, I was uninterested for the first couple of pages. At first I did not understand what direction this story was going. I, myself have never heard the song “Dixie” before. So I do not know the meaning of the song. Further into the reading, I started seeing why Daniel was so persistent with the Confederate flag. I do like how Daniel was not ashamed to sport the flag. The message of this story is to “rise above.” The Confederate flag has caused a major uproar between whites and blacks recently. Many African American people have felt offended due to the flag. This reading was assigned to show us the other side of the conflict. Most reports of people being offended about the flag because it was “racist.” This story shows how African American people rebelled in an appropriate, non-violent way. There were many factors…
Neurons can only regenerate, or I should say re-synapse with neighboring neurons, if they are realigned with each other surgically…
The brain is a very important part of our body.It is the reason we are as inteligent as we are now.The Brain is basically our main body part.It controls our whole body and sends responses so we can move.Sabastian Seung is making a map to show the brain and Noe argues that the connectome is useless because its not advancing brain research and its just a useless map.Alva Noe convinces us that the brain map wont be useful by providing evidence and using different authors crafts to provide a stronger argument.…
The interesting accomplished by being able to get images of the brain and trying to determine the location of the mental process, watching the activity of different components of our brain, allowing us to study the effect of behavior, and the effect of our brains outputs. The field has grown over the past decades due to the expansion of computer technology and the greater understanding of genetics and biology and the fMRI imaging machines.…
In article “Brainology-Transforming students’ motivate to learn”, Carol Dweck describes two different types of mindset and how they affect student's learning profoundly. These types of mindset are students' belief about themselves or the way they use their basic abilities. Students with "fixed mindset" are stuck with what they know to keep their confidence; they are afraid of challenges and devastated by failures. In contrast, students with " growth mindset" believe their personality, intelligence and skill have come from practice; they assume that anyone can good at anything if they learn things with effort. By the amount of time I have heard people around saying they are bad at “ this" or at "that" and my own experience, I totally agree with the author that the…
Even today, much is still not directly understood how the brain works. The 1950s marks the start of the field of biopsychology focusing on Penfield as he began to research into neurochemistry and underlying behavior it causes. From this, scientists began to learn about the structure of the brain and how neurotransmitters and electrochemical signals are used in order to communicate throughout the body. Development of more specialized equipment and research into pharmaceuticals and surgical techniques has lead to a greater understanding of how the brain works and the ways in which disorders can be treated in…

The human brain is a complex and sophisticated organ. Understanding the function of the brain is often limited to the understanding of the brains areas with regard to how these areas respond to stimuli or in cases of damage. Much of the understanding of the brain is rooted in observation of damaged brains and their correlation of impaired function with specific areas of damage. Modern technologies have begun to change this trend because tools such as the Magnetic Resonance Imager (MRI) allows scientist to observe brain function with the invasiveness of surgery. This technology has provided not just insights into neuroscience but also into psychology as brain functions can now be correlated better with behavior and heredity. One can see this insight when examining specific areas of the brain such as the temporal and frontal lobes of the brain.…
David Eagleman's remarkable neuroscience novel, Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, literally puts the human mind to the test. Throughout the novel, Eagleman presents numerous examples, diagrams, and conjectures in order to explain the vital relationship between the mind's subconscious and biological abilities and the body. Contrary to popular belief, Eagleman explains to his readers that the brain is more than just a pink glob in the head of an individual, but the actual control system of the brain that has the ability to perform advanced tasks that one probably would have never imagined. As a whole, this novel definitely invigorated my thought processes as it's informative yet highly interesting connotation kept me wondering what astounding…
The PBS special "The Secret Life of the Brain" took us through all different aspects of the brain and its formation through life. These five movies taught us that the brain is plastic and is always changing, cutting unused neurons and filling with different ideas and thoughts that you learn from your environment. The five videos go through the five stages of life; baby, child, teenager, adult and finally the aging brain.…
