A Navajo surgeon, Lori Arviso Alvord, recalls her experiences in Dartmouth and how it has influenced her life, as well as her career in her excerpt, “Walking the Path between Worlds.” She was accepted into Dartmouth, leaving behind her community and her family in Dinetah and the Navajo reservation, where she experienced a sense of alienation and loneliness in her life, as she was overwhelmed with how different the culture was compared to her own. Alvord struggled with whether to maintain her customs and culture or to adapt to the life at Dartmouth, risking losing her Navajo heritage as a result. Later on, she met many different Native Americans from other tribes, all coming together in Dartmouth, as they tried to form a community based on common…

Three teenagers have won the opportunity to go to the moon for a week, and this is how it happened. Mia, from Norway, is upset because her parents signed her up for the 2019 Moon Trip “raffle” so to speak, but, the thing is, she didn’t want to go. Midori, from Japan, is excited for this trip because she can be free and is able to explore different places other than Japan. Antoine, from France, just broke up with his cheating girlfriend and never wants to see her again. In the science-fiction book 172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad, the theme is that trying new things could have a positive impact on one’s life. “Whenever I get a chance to observe the moon now, I still see those same images I saw when I was six and it pleases me to know that that part of my childhood is still embedded in me” (17). The book begins with introducing Ishmael Beah’s young life such as his interest in rap music and dance, his close relationships with family and friends, as well as expressing his innocence through these childhood memories. He would remember depicting different images of the moon by using his imagination, which shows the reader the vulnerability of his character before the war arose. I thought this was a significant portion of the text, because it was one of the remembrances that comforted the appalling experience Beah had endure through. How does the author’s…
Beginning from 1942 to 1992 the United States has done almost 1032 nuclear bomb testing around the equator. Even though it was a big step forward for the United States, when it comes to developing nuclear bombs. Consequently, the bomb testing resulted civilians to move from their hometown, furthermore left them exposed to radiation as a result causing them several unwanted diseases and genetic mutations. The worst part is at times, the civilians were left with no right to express their opinion nor feelings towards the bomb testing. That’s when Jane Dibblin a British journalist steps up. In her book the Day of Two Suns: U.S. Nuclear Testing and the Pacific Islanders Dibblin projects to the world the unheard voices of the native villagers…
The Tree of Red Stars, by Tessa Bridal, presents many themes throughout the story. The story itself is of Magdalena Ortega Grey growing up in Uruguay as it is taken over by a military dictatorship. It chronicles not only her life, but the life of the poor, the social injustices of this time and the revolt against it. One of the themes contained in this novel is that of the activism of students. Students are the leaders of this revolt, they lead the Tupamaros. Students are displayed as the activists working for change. This can be compared to any college campus as university students are usually much more active politically than other groups of people in society.…

In Passing by Nella Larsen Gertrude, Clare, and Irene are women that live with passing differently. Each woman approaches passing differently because all have different perspectives of it. Some care about how passing might affect someone while the others do not. Irene being the only one who does not pass as white thinks before she does something, she cares about people’s feelings and how something might affect someone and she only passes when she needs to. Unlike, Clare she does it to make her life easier knowing that it would disturb her husband since he does not know she is black. On the other hand, Gertrude just passes to make her life easier. In Passing Larsen explains, “That, Irene pointed out, was exactly like Clare Kendry. Taking a chance,…
Ruby Moon is a gothic fairytale, with the play repeatedly drawing on the familiar tale of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. A parent’s worst nightmare is to have lost their child, especially if the neighbour is assumed to have been involved. “The child randomly taken from our midst is an all-too-common tragedy which threatens us in a deeply primal way” (Matt Cameron). In using this element of a crippled fairy-tale with the added form of heightened naturalism, there is the constant essence of fears of contemporary suburbia, woods and wolves, of strangers taking what is most precious to people, this effectively has an uncomfortable and unsettling impact on the audience as they are positioned and confronted with the ideas of how bad society could be, and invites them to wonder and relate it back to their own lives and own children. Cameron describes the setting of the play as being “timeless and placeless.” With not specifying where it is, when it was and essentially saying that all of this could happen to anyone.…
Kate Chopin's "Ripe Figs," leaves my mind searching for more. I do not feel satisfied after reading and re-reading this story. A little girl name Babette lives with her godmother Maman Nainaine. Kate Chopin, I believe, is trying to depict the differences between a young girls view on time an older woman views. Babette is a young girl who can't wait for the figs to ripen. Is this because she wants to eat the figs? No, it is because Maman Nainaine told her she can visit her cousins on the Bayou-Lafourche when the figs have ripened. You can see the seasons changing as Babette is watching the figs close, for any signs of change. They go from seedlings to these beautiful ripe figs, much like the growth of ourselves. We start small and then eventually, after many "seasons," we "ripen."…
