In Karen Russell’s short story, St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, she shows what being civilized is by presenting Claudette’s progression throughout the story. Before Claudette’s exposure to St. Lucy she felt free to express herself in any shape or form, but she soon changed into a person who was confined to the way she acted and talked. She was wild and exuberant, and she didn’t care how she looked. In spite of this, she was forced to conform, turning her into someone who had to look after her appearance, and she had to speak and act with a filter.
