Summary of the last few chapters of Sula in chapter 1940, Sula is ill and Nel decide to see her. But she was very nervous because they haven’t seen each other in 3 years. Nel wanted to help Sula so she asked if she needed anything and Sula sends her to pick up some medicine at the drugstore. Once they started talking, it led to arguing. Sula then tells Nel why she slept with Jude. Nel gets upset with Sula and left saying she isn’t going to come back to see her anymore. At the end of chapter 1940, Sula realizes she is dead, and wanted to let Nel know that death was painless. The bottom gets destroyed by cold days of frost. Rain fell and froze up causing all the crops to die out, and people were housebound for a couple of days. By the time the ice melted many people had scarlet fever and many other diseases. Sula’s death caused some people to become very irritable. She wasn’t well liked in the bottoms. In fact some people considered Sula’s death as a good thing. They thought of Sula as a witch. They thought after her death things would get better but the weather just destroyed their hope. In chapter 1941 Shadrack starts to feel lonely. He thinks back to a frightened crying child he met years ago. He saw a tadpole birthmark over his eyes and considered her as a friend. When he saw Sula’s dead body, he saw the same thing. It was the night before national suicide day and for the first time Shadrack didn’t want to go out and march but does it anyways. During the march, they entered a construction site and vandalized it to because black workers are being denied jobs there. The site collapses and many of the people in the march with Shadrack die. By 1965, many things had gotten better. Not too many people lived in the bottoms anymore. The white people were buying land and building houses. The land was even more valuable. Colored people were more respected and had more
