Synthesizing Essay The main characters in Jane Yolen’s story “ Suzy and Leah” are Leah, a refugee in America (also a German-born Jew), and Suzy, an American girl. Some people just naturally don’t get along, but some don’t get along at first then the relationship changes by getting to know each other. Suzy had to learn a brutal truth to understand what some of the things meant in Leah’s diary like what yellow stars were and why Leah’s family members were killed. Eventually, the two became friends because they understood each other and what the other had been through. Leah finally got to know Suzy by reading her diary.
