Summary Of Teen Sexting
Teens and Sexting – What are Appropriate Consequences? In a world like today's, technology is being produced and improved at rapid rates. Technology can be a wonderful tool allowing teens to communicate at high rates. At times this can be nice, but when it comes to sexting, officials are taking it to a whole new level. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, "sexting is the sending of sexually explicit messages or images by cell phone." In the article, “Teens, Nude Photos and the Law” by Dahlia Lithwick, Lithwick argues that teens should not be punished with criminal charges for sexting. Lithwick argues that the teen’s parents should make their teens aware that these mistakes could last a lifetime when online instead of teens receiving punishments and getting the police involved. For some teens, their parents may get involved in the teen’s actions, but what happens to those teens who have parents that don’t do anything about the situation? Are these teens going to keep sexting because they can manage to get away with it without their parents knowing? Parents talking to their teens …show more content…
Lithwick suggest that these parents need to remind their teen that stupid decisions can not be deleted once on the internet. Parents need to be involved in sexting situations, but a counselor will do a better job in helping these teens make the right decisions. The counselor will be able to “counsel teens to delete hurtful texts or sexts that they receive and not to forward these messages” (Saxena, Harshita, and Silber). The counselor will be able to help discuss the outcome of sending and posting improper messages and photos with the teens (Saxena, Harshita, and Silber). It is important that the counselor helps the teens because counselors have been educated about how to handle teens sending inappropriate messages or

According to Julia Mckinnell in the article “Control, Alt, Erase” she talks about how social networking has become a problem for teenagers, and how parents can serve as “a role model” by helping and making sure that their kids personal information is safe. Mckinnell gives important reasons why parents should be aware of the consequences that social networks can have on their children. Posting a message, a tweet, or a photo online can give away the location and time it was posted. This data can be used to identify, or to gather personal information. For example, Tech companies gather personal data onto teenager's social media accounts for profit (Mckinnell). Also, jobs might look to gather data about certain individuals to know who they hire. Therefore, it's important for parents to teach their children risks involving sharing personal information to the public.…

Since kids see it as a norm this is one of the leading causes of sexting Rosin mentions. If everyone's doing it this could lead kids to think why shouldn’t they. If no one is stopping the kids and they see their classmates engage in it or friends mention it will give make the kid want to do it. This normalization leads to another cause of sexting as well. Kids who don’t engage in sexting will feel pressured to sext. Rosin addresses these kids as “pressured sexters” and these pressured setters are usually girls. Since boys are the ones a majority of the time asking for pictures girls feel compelled to send them because they continually ask for them. If we don’t let kids know that sexting isn’t normal and they don’t have to send a photo if they don’t want to then they will continue to do it and will never see sexting has a problem. This is where the parents come in. They need to be engaged in their kid's social media and know whats going on with them. Rosin says that they have to take “a deep breath” and ask questions and I completely agree with…

I will discuss "sexting" in the next blog. Teens' frontal lobes of the brain, which are involved in planning and thinking of long-term consequences, are not fully developed until their mid-20s. That is why teens, as well as many college students, often engage in risk-taking behaviors. We can all probably look back to things we did when we were young and say to ourselves, "What was I thinking?!?" In a way, you can serve as a surrogate frontal lobes for your teen. You need to do so carefully and not just list out the dangers to your teen. You should try to get your teen to think of the consequences of misuse of the cell phones for him/herself through some Socratic questioning. Again, your should refrain from being judgmental. Realize that, if we were teens now, we'd probably be making many of the same…

In social media, people can easily find videos and images that promotes “sexual addictive behavior.” These free sexual images and videos can lead to teens taking the next step on clicking the internet sites that gives “sex chat, sexual hook-ups, prostitutes, or finding old acting-out partners” (Hatch). Paulla Hall, a sex addiction therapist, claims about forty percent of teenagers had seen pornography before age of twelfth. For men, excitement was the reason for their sexual behavior. In women, “affirmation and feeling wanted” was their reason. Because teenagers lack of education and easy access to porn, it can easily lead them to become addicted. Keir Starmer, the Director of Public Prosecutions, admits internet pornography have increased violence in teenage relationships over the year…

In the eighth grade, while considering these doubts, some of peers decided to make “exceptions” as to what adhered to their morals. One factor, of course, was their phones. Our phones pose a great challenge between right and wrong. On our phones, many things such as alcohol, sex, and drugs are advertised as fun. When we see something that is common amongst others, we may feel empowered to participate in it. Sadly, some teenagers may choose to participate in actions such as underage drinking and sending or sharing inappropriate photos. The decent morals and principles that teenagers may have followed are all neglected because of what is advertised by social media. Personally, with three older siblings, I was given better knowledge of and warned about the damage social media could have on my life. This allowed me to protect myself and persuading a few friends to rethink their choices. Even though my actions were potentially status damaging, I stayed true to my morals. My experience with social media and its effect on the teenage mindset has opened my eyes to the reality of our connected world today. As a teenager, I have realized that worrying about social status can make us question our morals and behave in ways that are…

Teens are sexting and sending explicit pictures to their boyfriends or girlfriend and expect them to keep it to themselves. They do not think about the risks of doing so. There young teens do nit think about the consequences behind this action. Teenagers should not be allowed to send nude pictures or sext until the age of 18 because young teens are more prone to peer pressure, insecurities and they do not have the same privileges as an 18 year old.…

In the past, child pornography laws in Canada were strictly there to save children from abuse, however, more recently these laws have been applied to teenagers to discipline them for sexting. Misusing these laws can have dramatic long term effects on a teenager, and label them a predator or a pervert. Although sexting is an inappropriate behaviour which can cause irreparable damage on victims, we need to discover new ways to discipline teenagers in sexting cases, instead of applying an incorrect law which comes with an unreasonable sentence and label.…
