Nursing, in my opinion, is one of the most significant professions that one can be blessed to acquire. To those who pursue this field know it is a career that requires far more than simply an education even though the knowledge acquired from a degree is extremely important and necessary, by grasping rationale of the laws and regulations that rule nursing. A career in nursing requires someone to have compassion, sympathy, and care for others, especially those who are suffering from pain, illness and lack the understanding of what is happening to them or a loved one. It is a career of humanity, and it is this that first attracted me to a Masters degree in Nursing. My philosophy about nursing is that it is a career that one has to work hard for, but also a career that a person needs to have to a natural affinity for. I also believe one must have a commitment to helping others not expecting anything in return but a smile and knowing when you go home you gave your all. The ability to be a compassionate, caring nurse is what I hope to bring to the Masters degree in Nursing Program, gaining…
Nursing comprises the largest health care workforce in the United States. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration survey, there are more than 3 million registered nurses (RN) nationwide. The survey also shows that 50.0% of the workforce holds a baccalaureate (BSN) or graduate degree while 36.1% earned an associate degree (ADN) and 13.9% a diploma in nursing (AACN, 2013). There are multiple pathways available for one to become a nurse. Today, the ADN and BSN degrees are the most common pathway selected by future nurses. This paper’s primary focus will be to comprehend the competency differences of a nurse with an Associate’s degree in Nursing (ADN) vs. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN).…
But why are nurses with their Bachelors degree in science and nursing more competent and desired by hospitals? In our module two lecture notes “Nursing History, Theories, and Conceptual Models” an example of selecting the right key in order to get a desired outcome is given. Pushing the right key will give the desired outcome but a more educated person will understand why. Both Associates Degree and a Bachelors degree educated nurse will get a desired outcome by making the right decision or performing the correct duty, but the nurse with their Bachelors Degree will better understand why they are doing it and how to better modify their actions to get the desired…
When considering the impact on nursing due to the report on The Future of Nursing (IOM report, 2010), the need for increased nursing education becomes even more relevant. The nursing profession constitutes the largest segment of the medical field. Thus, nursing will undoubtedly have a vital role in the development of the medical field. However, according to the IOM report, “A number of barriers prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to rapidly changing healthcare setting and the evolving health care system” (IOM report, 2010).…
support required for successful completion, and my plan for a successful outcome in becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Discussion Nursing is a career that continues to demonstrate long-term demand. It can improve job security and provide long-term security. In some Oregon hospitals (I reside in the state of Oregon), the minimal educational requirements for Registered Nurses will soon be the Baccalaureate degree. “Accordingly, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing recognizes the Bachelor of Science degree in nursing as the minimal educational requirement for professional nursing practice” (Blais & Hayes, 2011, p. 4). Nurses returning to school learn more about the profession they’ve chosen. Delightfully, this may result in a change of perspectives of their previously conceived ideas of the meaning of nursing, the world around them, and themselves. Education enhances self-confidence and one’s sense of purpose. Being able to say, “I did it!” provides a great sense of accomplishment. In addition, returning to school helps one to improve computer skills, writing ability, and organizational skills. “Although RNs felt they returned to school as skilled, knowledgeable and professional practitioners, they reported growing beyond their expectations in areas of knowledge and professionalism, which they felt led the to become more effective change agents and patient…
One of the topics discussed in this report is the future of nursing education. The changes being made to our country’s healthcare system must include changes in nursing education prior to licensing and post license practicing nurses. With this change comes the need for a larger amount of nurses entering the workforce to have a bachelor’s degree or obtain it very early in the career. This report states that nurses must be adequately trained to care for a diverse population and to provide all patients safe and quality care and to perform as a leader. Nurses also must be prepared to care for patients in different care settings, such as, community and public health settings. The baccalaureate nurse receives this education whereas an associate’s degree nurse does not. Nurses should continue to educate themselves throughout the career with physicians and other healthcare professionals. A better educated nurse leads to better education for the patient thus possibly keeping them from an…

Healthcare abounds with occupations dedicated to serving a variety of populations. Each profession has distinct qualities that warrant specific talents. As the daughter of a Registered Nurse, I saw first-hand the characteristics nursing required. Though I enjoyed learning about the human body, I knew nursing was not my calling. My initial educational goals and work experience were directed towards becoming a marriage and family therapist. After I finished my Associate's degree and married, I postponed my education to focus on raising my children. During this period, I judiciously considered my career options as I transitioned from a young woman focused on discovering her purpose to a wife and mother with a family depending on her guidance, support, and affection. Switching gears at this point seemed daunting because the risks transcended the investment of time and money. The requirements to successfully complete…
The nursing shortage is not an issue that can be ignored any longer. The shortage is becoming a nationwide issue, and the nation needs to take action. Fewer people are entering the nursing profession, current nurses are retiring and leaving their jobs, and the dissatisfaction with patients and staff is not being taken care of. The following is an annotated bibliography which summarizes and evaluates three sources that address the nursing shortage.…
There are numerous reasons for the nursing shortage nationwide. Perhaps one of the most influential reasons is related to the scarcity of resources that include nursing faculty. A decreased nursing force can be directly correlated with the declining number of nursing faculty available. Multiple factors including lack of interest in becoming nursing faculty, lack of funding, noncompetitive salaries, aging faculty, and global migration of nurses affect the nursing faculty shortage. If left unsolved, the issue of a scarce and diminishing nursing faculty will result in a larger nursing shortage. Appropriation of funds to nursing education programs and facilities…
The nursing shortage is a growing concern for the nation. The aging population is causing more demand for qualified healthcare professionals. At the same time, healthcare professionals are retiring faster than they can be replaced. This shortage of nursing professionals is causing more overtime work, which creates more nursing errors. Scholarships and grants are being awarded to students to try and generate more nursing professionals. Many facilities are offering tuition reimbursement incentives to help lure nursing professionals. Many facilities are also offering sign-on bonuses. These incentives show how serious the increasing need for qualified nursing professionals is becoming.…
The nursing shortage impacts the world in a prodigious way. The nursing shortage has an adverse impact on patient care, as well as on nurses. The causes of the nursing shortage are multi-faceted and there is no single measure that influences the declining issues. The most concerning issue of the nursing shortage is the decline in patient care, and positive outcome (Buchan, 2010). The research question in this study is the following: How does the nursing shortage affect quality of patient care, work stress and nurse job satisfaction? It is a well-known fact that the nursing shortage increases work stress, by increasing workload and in return, this effects nursing care in a tremendous way.…
For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. My mother was a single unemployed woman for most of my life. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…
Nursing is a profession where people are brought together, usually at a time of vulnerability. Nurses, like the patients they care for, are constantly facing challenges, yet for nurses those challenges are often directed at their academic and skill capabilities. Due to individual and general population health needs changing, our health care system is consistently expanding, and it is necessary that nurses know more and be effectively trained to provide care in a revolutionized organization. A modest, but expanding, amount of hospitals are requiring all newly graduated nurses to have a bachelor’s degree in nursing or higher at the time of hire and indicators are that many more hospitals will require the same in years soon to come (ANA, 2013).…
Imagine being admitted into the hospital with a serious illness and knowing that you may not get the proper care that you need and desire because the nursing staff is short. That could be very dangerous depending on what’s going on with your health. Nurses have always been a huge part of the medical field because of the diversity of the occupation. Patients rely on the care of nurses while healing/recovering and when that care can’t be given, there is a big problem. The shortage of nurses in the twenty-first century will greatly impact the well being and outcome of patients.…
