Hedges and Sacco introduce Chapter 2 with Silvia Ramos, she was in a bakery when the gunman came in and shot Hernadez, her husband, a bullet through his heart. He then speaks of the violence in those communities and if that violence continues and are not handled at that time, then more is to come, “violence begets violence” (64). He makes a point that the communities which are suffering from this violence stem from “Slavery. Segregation. Sharecropping.…
The act of kindness this student performed was one she does often and without a second thought. Whenever she sees an elderly person in a grocery store that appears to be looking for something or cannot reach an item she assists in any capacity she can. Her father taught this to her as the golden rule, and it is a part of her personality makeup. Her actions could be considered altruism that is selfishness in reverse. An altruistic person, he or she is helpful and concerned even when no benefits are expected in return (Myers, 2010).…
An act of kindness can develop values for both the person receiving the aid and the person offering the support as well as community development. In this summary key points are discussed on altruism. The summary stems from an act of kindness, which was conducted by the author as a student of Capstone Course in Psychology/Psy 490. I presented money to a person who needed money for his or her next meal, without expecting anything in return. A person does not realize the degree of emotions involved in experiencing need nor true concern until he or she begins to offer support with no desire of reward.…
Effective altruists recognize that the worth of anyone is equal to their own and believe that everyone should work towards good (Singer, 2015 p. 82). Through this reasoning, effective altruists are not influence by strong emotions to help out a single, recognizable person, but are motivated to reach out to the most number of people as they can even if these people were to remain anonymous. Their minds operate so that they prioritize helping out more people rather than a smaller group (Singer, 2015, p.82). In short, in this chapter, Singer emphasizes that actions must be grounded in the reasoning of working for the good of as many people as…
The random act of kindness that I completed this week was buying an old man a coffee in front of me at Starbucks. He ordered a Grande Pike with room. I heard the order and said “I’ll get that miss” and without even hesitating handed over my card to pay for the drink. The older man look at me with a cracked smile and confused kind of look before muttering the words “you didn’t have to do that young man, but thank you” I replied with a smile on my face “no problem Sir”.…
Social Movements often have a symbolic figure; that does not mean, however that there is usually one figure. The symbolic figure’s actions often represent a pivotal moment in the movement or a sacrifice for the movement. Martin Luther King, Patrice Lumumba, and Nelson Mandela, among others are some of the well-known icons of their respective movements. In “Deeds, not Words,” Diane Atkinson suggests that Emily Wilding Davison’s actions on June 4, 1913, ultimately established Davison as an icon for women’s suffrage and women’s rights movements. Atkinson explains that Davison is recognized as a martyr or “fallen warrior” (Atkinson), though her initial actions were disapproved of by the public at the time.…
Aesop, an ancient Greek storyteller, once said, ”No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Small acts of kindness can have huge impacts on others. First, small acts of kindness might cause the domino effect. Second, acts of kindness can make people’s day. Finally, doing small acts of kindness makes you a good role model for younger people. As a result, a small act of kindness can make a positive impact on another person’s life.…
Being observant in these situations can help improve your willingness to take part in an action of assistance, seeing others help someone can physically influence you to participate in the action as well. Being well knowledged is a major part of overcoming this negative habit, but also keep in mind that having a personal experience in a past or recent event can also create a big influence on how you view society. Researchers have discovered that if an individual were to see another individual in a much poorer state of being, then he/she would have obtained a sense of guilt or remorse and are furthermore likely be obligated into assisting that individual, this act of kindness can thus influence others to do the same in their own times. Having a good attitude can greatly affect those around you, not only does it make you seem like a much better person, but it also gives others the sense that you are a kind and sensible human being. Having a good vibe can sometimes rub off on other people, seeing that you are enjoying your time could possibly open up new perspectives on how you are viewed. Your mood can cause a great change in the way you act towards others, for say if you were depressed or ill, you would most likely not have the intention to help others in need unless it relates to your situation in a…
There is a famous quote, which states: "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." This quote is technically true. But if there are no guns, it will be a whole lot more difficult for people to kill people. Sure people could use different weapons such as knives and golf clubs to kill people. But the victim will have a significant better chance of defending him or herself from a weapon other than firearms.…
Before I started doing community service I really didn’t care about others. I was just in my own world and just doing things that weren’t that beneficial for me and others. But that changed once I started to know other people’s situations. Realizing what the people who I was helping went through helped me have a change of heart. It made me care about others and understand how they felt.…
Social psychologists have tried to explain pro-social behavior because helping others is a good behavior. The argument “pits the empathy-altruism hypothesis against egoistic alternatives” (Fiske, 2010, p. 371). This paper has summarized the argument of altruism versus egotistic, evaluated the argument, and given a personal opinion on the subject of altruism versus egotistic.…
For some people they have the best life and get everything they need and want for themselves. For some people on the other hand they don't have it that way and get the short end of the stick. For the people you see and help It comes straight from the heart because they don't have it easy and from me to them I realize that by helping them just a little it could jumpstart them to a fresh life and show them we care. I realize that I have as much as I need and I always ask my parents for money and to go out places but some people don't even have homes or food to provide and eat. By helping out a needing hand it makes me realize that I don't need everything in the world and it should help other people realize to that by looking at the life you have if you're rich or wealthy to help someone in need is the right thing to do and what I like doing best.…
My interpretation of “people helping people” is “people helping people” can be looked at as a selfless act of encouragement to one individual or a whole community. By helping those with a certain need to only get the profit of satisfaction is a fundamental philosophy to keep our society well-endowed and strong as a community. I have personally demonstrated this in my community by participating in my school’s Operation Christmas Child to help children across the world see what a better life is and to help them reach it on earth, and with God. I also volunteered for four summers at our City’s Park’s Program as a junior counselor, watching children and giving them a place to enjoy their summer outside and also educate them as we took field trips to the Corning Museum of Glass. I personally have lived by my own interpretation of the selfless philosophy of “people helping people”…
Throughout my life I have wanted to help others and found myself in jobs which involved looking after people. I examined my motivation for helping others; I have sometimes helped others because it made me feel useful, accepted and valued. At times in my life, I have experienced low self esteem. Therefore by helping someone, I have felt useful and valued, which has in turn increased my self esteem. This is certainly not a healthy motivation for helping others.…
In this short story “The Secret Lion” Alberto Alvaro Rios invited me into the world of an imaginative Hispanic youth who is going through the coming-of-age crisis. The story is written in the first person point of view, and portrays the struggle of the speaker and his friend Sergio against the sweeping force of change that accompanies the transition from childhood to young adulthood. The antagonist is time-time that has the power to transform them into the dull and unimaginative adults that they know. They see this change happening to friends like Sandy who now only cares about playing the piano.…
