Summary Of The Banking Concept Of Education
Education is a key component to the growth and continuation of the human race, without it, society would not develop as a whole. Nations all throughout the world require education because they understand the importance it plays in all accounts of life, ranging from happiness to economics. Philosopher Paulo Freire understands the importance of it and condemns the modern day form of education. Freire defines two types of education; firstly the Banking Concept of Education (our modern day education), which he defines, as “Knowledge is a fight bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon whom they consider know nothing.” Second he poses another form of educating, Problem Posing, which “Affirms men and women as unfinished”, and learning must be in the “pursuit of full humanity”. Initially his article The “Banking” Concept of Education appears to be a rant on how teachers put up a façade, posing as humanitarians who really aim to oppress mindless students. Although he later concludes that no one being is perfect and recognizing this along with the “emergence of consciousness” allows humans to grow and candidly experience life, in turn making us more human. Even then, I still found some teachers teaching to be “an act of depositing”. For example many teachers find the best way to prep students for a test is to tell them exactly what to study for, I find this to be relatable to Freires beliefs when he claims students “memorize mechanically the narrated content”. The act of telling students exactly what to study for removes the act of inquiry, narration kills curiosity which I find to be an innate human trait which cultivates learning. Question why a teacher finds this to be the best way to “teach” students, is it because her job is to get students to pass the test, or

    Freire describes the “banking” concept of education by saying that “Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor. Instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiqués and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat” (Freire 244).     My own experience as a student has allowed me to develop multiple opinions about Freire’s concerns on conventional learning and his innovative idea of problem solving education. I believe that my reaction and opinion’s to Freire’s essay is moderate, I believe that if a student is only exposed to traditional learning then yes he or she will be crippled. However, in my experience as a student, I believe there are occasions where an environment of a teacher teaching and students listening totally appropriate. There needs to be a balance between nontraditional learning and traditional learning. Freire’s banking concept is an occurring event in today’s education but I wouldn’t necessarily go as far as diagnosing that it’s the problem that the education system needs to get rid of.
