When Neli was first placed in solitary confinement, a man with an IQ of 69, his initial response was licking the cell floor that was covered in his own urine. Atul Gawande, a surgeon who writes about public health issues states, “One of the paradoxes of solitary confinement is that, as starved as people become for companionship, the experience typically leaves them unfit for social interaction.” (Washington Post, George F. Will). Not only is Neli trying to cope with his disability-which already limits his ability to interact with people normally and hold a conversation-but he is segregated from the other inmates to be left with negative thoughts.
