Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
To deal with the loss of his father, Oskar Schell, the main character of Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, embarks on a journey to symbolize the acceptance of his loss. When you lose someone that you truly love and care about it can be hard to move on with your life if you don’t have closure. "Your dad didn't die, so I won't be able to explain it to you." (Foer 50). Oskar's dad's death had taken a big toll in Oskar’s life. He defines himself has the kid who's dad died on 9/11 and still feels like there is still something more to his father’s death. Oskar departs on a journey to find the lock that goes with the key. Throughout the journey he comes across people that help him feel better with the situation with his father, for example, his grandma, “When I look at you, my life made sense. Even the bad things made sense. They were necessary to make you possible.”(Foer 232). In this quote Oskar’s grandmother is telling him that everything happens for a reason and the he should embrace life and to move past his sadness. She lets Oskar know that happiness and sadness are connected, but you have to embrace both, instead of dwelling only on the sad. “I don’t believe in God, but I believe that things are extremely complicated, and her looking over me was as complicated as anything ever could be. But it was also incredibly simple. In my only life, she was my mom, and I was her son.” (Foer 324). In the quote, he realizes that there is never an easy answers to things that are important and that life is made of emotional reality and scientific facts. Also, at the end of the novel, Oskar is beginning to appreciate his mother more and we begin to see that he is gone through this emotional journey successfully. The
