For example, in the last paragraph of the essay she writes, “So religious discourse should not attempt to impart clear information about the divine but should lead to an appreciation of the limits of language and understanding” (Armstrong 38). In her intricate and detailed descriptions of early religious practices, Armstrong insists on the often ineffable or unsayable aspects of ritual practice and belief. At the same time, in her descriptions of these practices, Armstrong makes recourse to a methodology and vocabulary for giving voice to these many cultures. Even in the case of the culture at Lascaux - people we know very little about- Armstrong puts forward ideas about the motivations and possible symbology of the representations in the cave.…
Hi Ashley. I enjoyed reading your writing because your writing has thoughtful explanation of the article “Creating the Myth,” by Linda Seger, and it was easy to comprehend. I believe you did well on analyzing your fairy tale story, “Sleeping Beauty,” with using the examples of the archetypal characters. As you mentioned about the Seger’s point in his article, “The hero myth depicts what everyone wants and is a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation.” I agree with you, “This fairy tale also followed the hero myth like many other big films today still do and it is important to identify the different types of archetypes.”…
These two stories were very similar “Her Second Career” is about a woman named Claire Nash who believed that she has talent. The talent she has is acting, acting she said could not be learned or at least made it seem that way. She is very conceded and thinks highly of herself. She learns a lesson that becoming an actress is not as easy as she thought, even though she had once been a famous actress. The second time around was not so easy. In the story the “Knight King”, Steve Hawkins is also conceded and recognized himself as one of the top thieves in the business. He is trying to steal a black diamond owned by Winton Stokes. He has been working for him for a couple years and has been trying to plan a robbery to steal the diamond.…
In today’s world it is normal, that people feel uncomfortable and threatened by things they can`t place a label on. That’s why a gender-neutral baby would be confusing for nearly every instance, like the story of X by Lois Gould shows. It is just human to try to label everything and it causes a lot of problems, if this is impossible, even if the “thing” where no label can be placed on is a baby.…
In the poem The Gift written by Li-Young Lee the meaning could be a numberless amount of things. The message I concluded from it is that kindness and love is passed down. There are many pieces of evidence that prove this. First of all, the son explains watching his father’s lovely face while he told a story.…
When the Legend Dies The book “When the Legend Dies” is a tale about a young boy named Tom Black Bull was raised by his mother and as she raises him to live like the people in the old days lived such as living in the forest and hunting for food and shelter. The book was written by Hal Borland. As you could probably notice is that there were many changes happening with Tom. So let’s move on and see what changes there were.…
The family benefits from Lina’s mother’s calmness by not having to worry as much. They were able to stay calm and pack up their belongings. Their mother’s calmness also prevents them from becoming scared. They did what the officers told them instead of rebelling. Yes, I consider Lina’s mother breaking the dishes an act of rebellion. She knew what they were going to do with the dishes if she did not break them. She loved her dishes and didn’t want the Nazi’s to use, sell, or profit from them. In my opinion, her reaction is appropriate. The Nazi’s did nothing to earn those items. She had the right to do break the dishes because they were coming to take away her and her family. She is trying to control the situation by breaking her china instead…
In life, it is essential to understand that certain things are beyond control, leaving them to be inevitable, despite how hard we try to fight these statistics. In Jacqueline Woodson’s piece, “Parents Poem” the speaker touches on this concept when both of his parents die unexpectedly, throughout the poem “Lonnie” is able to explain his grieving and how the author shows how he is able to cope with his loss.. By the end of this poem Woodson effectively illustrates how everyone grieves differently and during this process death has the ability to destroy an individual, however a sense of security can be created with memories by suggesting that the moments created with someone are not to be forgotten even if the rest of the world might forget them.…
I would recommend the book Ever After High The Storybook Of Legends by Shannon Hale to a friend because of Raven Queen’s interesting decisions. “Clide, come on. You’re going to be late! GET UP!” screeched the woman of the house, my mom Sandra. I’m taking my time as usual, dragging my feet off my cosy bed as my numb arms reach for my drawer. Our family isn’t very rich, so I don’t have a wide range of clothes to pick from. I wear a black top and jeans, the usual. My mom says that black makes my eyes standout since they’re ever green. I quickly brush my hair even though they always look messy regardless of the amount of times I take showers. “Clide, don’t make me come up there!” “It’s the first day! You must make a good impression!” “Jeez Mom, I’m coming!” I shout as I slide down the stair handles. Although mom always told me to not do it, I have a habit of not listening to her. I quickly…
“Even with my apprenticeship, I’ll still work at the tavern twice each week,” Joan reminded Will. “And we live so close! You’ll have meals at the castle with me sometimes, won’t you?”…
I particularly admire May because of how humble she is towards everyone and also the animal life as well as insects. Even though she sometimes has breakdowns she always is helping others. She has lost a lot with her twin sister's death and Zach going to jail. She is similar to me because we both have been through things that have put us into a depressed state of mind and are also sensitive to what others say to us. To help cope better with our feelings we have done many things to try and help, May built a wall to put her feelings on a note and puts it onto the wall which she calls it her wailing wall, I have done stuff similar like writing my feelings into a book that is hidden under my bed. She sings herself a song when she is upset, as for…

John Steinbeck was born in February 1902 in Salinas, California and died in December 1968. Steinbeck enrolled in Stanford University however he never graduated. After an unsuccessful try to establish himself in New York he returned to California to do what he did best: write. Steinbeck’s first novel was published in 1929 but his first critical success was achieved with Tortilla Flat which won the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal and which deals with the humorous adventures of young men in Monterey during the Great Depression.…
