The novel that I am reading is “I’m Not Her” by Janet Gurtler. It is about the struggles a young girl, named Tess, goes through when she finds out that her sister, Kristina, was diagnosed with cancer. Tess has always been looking up to her older sister, because her sister was always the center of the crowd, sporty, beautiful one and Tess was always the smart, un-popular one. It was always hard on Tess, so when her sister was diagnosed with cancer, she felt as if she could finally be known. All of Kristina’s friends started befriending Tess, now that her sister wasn’t at school. Although Tess loved the popularity, she did have a lot of trouble too. Not a lot of people were asking how Tess was doing about the whole cancer situation but there was one person who was always there for her. His name was Clark. After talking days upon days with him, Tess began to want to be more then friends with him. But Tess also knew that she had to be there for her sister and didn’t have time to have a serious love life at that point in time. Then Tess met a boy from school named Jeremy. Jeremy has a little crush on Kristina, but is also now good friends with Tess. Tess was wondering why he would always talk about Kristina, and then he finally informed her that he always hangs out with her at the hospital when he is visiting his mother, who also has cancer.…

The value of this story is, not everything seems as it appears. The theme is still relevant. Evil does not sleep, it is always seeking for its next victim. It comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and forms. Children and young adults are the most vulnerable and can fall easy preys to these predators. For example, the Ariel Castro Kidnappings. The three young girls who disappeared were Michelle Knight was 21 years of age, Amanda Berry 17 years old and Gina de Jesus only 14 years old. The first victim to be kidnapped by Ariel Castro was Michelle Knight. She went missing on August of 2002. It was believed she had voluntarily runaway due to the loss of a child custody case and being that she was an adult, adults do have the right to go missing if they want to. Sadly fifteen months after her disappearance, her name was taken off the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and the authorities stopped looking for her. The second victim was Amanda Berry, she disappeared in April of 2003, one day before her seventeenth birthday. Amanda was last seen leaving her…

How does a positive attitude help avoid conflict? According to Remez Sasson,”It brings optimism into your life, and makes it easier to avoid worries and negative thinking… you see the bright side of life” (Sasson). This shows that seeing the bright side of life will make all worries and negativity dissipate during tough challenges. During World War 2, many people used the method of positivity to endure the misery. From Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank tries to stay positive while in hiding. It was exceedingly challenging getting around without getting captured by the Nazi. Another novel is Dear Miss Breed: True Stories of the Incarceration During World War ll and a Librarian Who Made a Difference from Joanne Oppenheim. One of the many letters is from Louise Ogawa, and she, like all the other Japanese, had to go to an internment camp. To distance herself from the hardships, she tried to stay positive and think of the positive. Having a positive attitude is the best way to respond to conflict, especially during horrendous situations like World War 2.…

The poem Now I Become Myself by May Sarton explores the notion of how the structure of time helps one to find his or her authentic self through experience, discipline, and hard work. ‘Time’ accompanies what one has to go through and what evokes one’s personal growth. Continuously seeking experience in life and challenges in "many years and places," (line 2) May Sarton thrived to find her true self and to recognize her personal growth - she recalls the troublesome combat of being “dissolved and shaken”(line 3) in the past: "[running] madly,” (line 5) putting too much of attention on ‘time,’ and resulting the lost of her identity. In fact, to recognize who one truly is, one should be placid instead of being impatient; one should be pacing “[one’s]…
