The Eleventh Tuesday: We Talk About Our Culture(2/27)
Mitch’s story about Morrie at the college basketball game is humorous. Apparently, at a game at Brandeis in the 70’s, the crowd began shouting, “We’re number one!” Morrie, puzzled, stood up in the middle of the gymnasium and shouted, “What’s wrong with being number two?” We seem to lose our sense of pride in simple accomplishment as we grow up. When we are children, most of us, for example, are just happy to be on the baseball or football team. We’re really not concerned about being “number one.” What do you think accounts for this change? Explain. Mitch started being comfortable while Morrie was with specialists. The disease got to Morrie’s lungs now and Mitch learned how to loosen the phlegm from them. When I was a kid I wanted to be the center of attention and if that meant being number one then I had to be number one. I was only this way because my mother didn’t give me any attention but, when I grew up, I got the attention from my grandma and it got annoying. I like to give others attention now rather than getting it for myself. People today want unnecessary attention and get mad when they don’t have it. Society is stingy with attention but never want to give any to those who need and deserve it. To get attention in our culture today girl’s have to look like models and have nice eyebrows. Men have to be tall and have muscles to be seen. Everybody has to have money to be cared for. Morrie doesn’t care about money …show more content…
The Twelfth Tuesday: We Talk About Forgiveness(2/27)
The following aphorism begins the chapter about forgiveness: “Forgive yourself before you die. Then forgive others” (pg. 164). What is the significance of Morrie’s own need to forgive himself and others? Why is it important to forgive yourself and others? What can we learn from forgiveness and how can we learn to forgive others? What does society teach us about forgiveness? Research someone’s legacy ( historian, celebrity, world leader, etc.) and discuss what you learned about his/her legacy. How did this person make the world a better place? How will you make the world a better place to live in?
Morrie wants to forgive himself and others to be at peace for his regrets. It is important to forgive ourselves so we don’t dwell on things that we know won’t happen again. It is important to forgive others so we move on. We feel less stressed when we forgive ourselves. We can learn to forgive others by understanding once we forgive we can grow from whatever happened. Some people today don’t deserve to be forgiven but society taught us how to live and love ourselves from forgiveness. Martin Luther King wanted to speak what was in his heart and he made this world a better place by standing up for minorities and inspired blacks and whites to try for a more equal society. I want to make this world a better place by being a public speaker about abuse and drugs. Morrie made the world a better place by being a teacher and helping
