At the end of the essay, Al-Beyati concludes her story by telling us that many cars were passing by each other at the intersection and her taxi driver stopped them simultaneously by shooting a gun in the air. This odd ending indicates that there are so many things happening after the Iraq war that it is just not fully describable; it seems that the story is never-ending. This is also conveyed by Addario’s description as well because the end of the war did not necessarily stop everything and rather it still created conflicts between the civilians and the American soldiers.
Even though she is the insider, Al-Beyati thinks that her own people have a lack of understanding of their own cultural and religious values. For example, when the regime
