Summary Of The Excerpt From Nisi Shawl's Everfair
In the excerpt from Nisi Shawl’s Everfair, Lisette balances restraint and freedom through maintaining control over her bike while enjoying her bike ride, and by presenting herself as socially acceptable while accepting her own flaws. Lisette enjoys her bike ride by preparing for her ride extensively. Lisette meticulously notices her bike’s “spokes,” relating them to a “revolving web of intricacy” as she “[grips] the rubber molded around” the “metal handlebars,” making sure to aim the bike “straight along the lane.” The vivid imagery utilized to describe Lisette’s bike shows how she plans every aspect of her ride ahead of time to maintain full control of the situation. Lisette’s nervous excitement shows that she is ready to experience freedom

The Excerpt from Bossypants by Tina Fey gets your immediate attention with the title alone. I mean how many experts start with Bossypants? This excerpt also causes for immediate attention because of all the quotations and the (what I would call) back and forth bickering. The main point in this vignette/excerpt is the rules of improvisation. In the text Improvisation is broken down into 5 rules, “AGREE”, “YES”, “MAKE STATEMENTS” and “THERE ARE NO MISTAKES”. They show it’s hard through articles, for example, in the article “Excerpt from the Rope Burn”. In the excerpt from the Hobbit, the author, J.R.R., uses descriptive language to describe the setting and mood. This quote helps us form our claim by showing mood and setting, “He nibbled a bit of sorrel, and he drank from a small mountain stream that crossed the path, and he ate three wild strawberries that he found on its bank, but it was not much good.” This supports our claim by presenting that he was stuck in the wilderness without the resources he would normally use. The character scrounge…

The excerpt from Silent Spring began by describing a scene we all could recognize: a prosperous farmland, with a successful and healthy people inhabiting it. Every detail and description was clear and tangible, almost as if the readers could see the scene. This did draw them in, but the lack of information found at the end of the piece was able to captivate the readers even more so. At the very end of Carson’s tale, we see that the dreary and forlorn town was sprinkled with “a white granular powder…

the land and the quantity as well as the quality of the labour, will of necessity enter into the price. A pound of flax wrought into fine Brussels lace requires the labour of 14 persons for a year or of one person for 14 years, as may be seen from a calculation of the different processes in the supplement, where we also see that the price obtained for the lace suffices to pay for the maintenance of one person for 14 years as well as the profits of all the undertakers and merchants concerned…
