Chapter 2: Culture: Symbols, Ideas, and the Stuff of Life
Chapter 2 in Allan Johnson “The Forest and The Trees” is all about culture. This chapter goes over the symbols, ideas and the stuff of life. From my understanding after reading this chapter is that culture is what we resort to for the tools to comprehend things, including ourselves. In chapter 2 Johnson brings up the term constructing reality which means that every social system has a culture formed of symbols, words, ideas and even practices. Johnson verbalizes that when we give a thing or an object a name we generate an association with it. Which basically means we use symbols to create a reality. # 33). We all know that culture contains symbols which can make reference to words or even the ideas depicted. Culture also incorporates how we form the physical world that we live in. Like I said before by using symbols we are capable of creating a relationship with symbols that, so it will have some connection that may have something to do with us. When we use symbols to label things as a method to center our attention and construct a reality to reside in. This makes words intertwine a reality and connects to us. If we didn’t have symbols, we would be incapable of communicating our experience to each another or wouldn’t be able to apprehend how significant experiences can be for us.
