Summary Of The God We Never Knew And Jesus Camp

The God We Never Knew and Jesus Camp both demonstrate that there are many images of Jesus and that there is a link between Jesus and God. Marcus J. Borg explains that there are two versions of Jesus and that within each version there are many different interpretations of Jesus. The first version of Jesus is pre-Easter Jesus and the second version of Jesus is the post-Easter Jesus. Borg states that “The pre-Easter Jesus is the historical Jesus” (84). This is the Jesus while he was still alive and the human Jesus. This Jesus was not divine and he did not think of himself as divine. Borg later states that “The post-Easter Jesus is what Jesus became after his death” (85). The post-Easter Jesus is the common view in today’s society and post-Easter Jesus is the “Jesus of Christian tradition and experience” (Borg 85). These two images of Jesus relate to Jesus Camp because in Jesus Camp they teach the kids about both images of Jesus (pre-Easter and post-Easter). They also stress many of the “subimages” within the two main images. The children at the camp are being taught almost every aspect of Jesus that Marcus J. Borg discusses in his book. This ties back to the brainwashing because the adults are essentially training the children to be soldier of God. I think this is similar to what children in the Middle East think when they are becoming Muslims who join terrorist organizations. The organizations train them to be soldiers for God or Allah. It is interesting how the different religions use the children as soldiers. The adults at the camp are in a sense carrying on the movement that Jesus started and Jesus is like the overseer of the movement in his post-Easter
