In the short story “The Gold Mountain Coat” by Jody Fong Bates, the narrator remembers her childhood in a small town somewhere in Ontario; “The small town that was my home.” The story is told through the eyes of the little girl, from an immigrant Chinese family; “I was the only Chinese child in town.” By telling the story from her point of view there is no judgement, no analysis on what is happening or what will happen, which gives the reader a wide space to reflect on the story. Her tone is light and relaxing and even humorous at times. For example, when she is describing the two “round-faced” sons who remind her of bookends. She also enjoys comic books. She writes in great detail. It is amazing how well a little girl can observe and describe
