Ensign Mahan learned much of his naval profession by working on ships that supported the Northern blockade of the Southern ports during the Civil War.. After serving the Union side of the Civil War, Mahan spent the next twenty years making his career at sea. In 1886, Captain Mahan was appointed as a teacher of Naval History and Tactics at the newly founded Naval War College.
In 1890, Mahan published “The Influence of Sea Power Upon History”. It turned out to be one of the most important books written about sea power and influence of the Navy on history. The book discussed sea power and how the influence of the Navy had a direct effect on how powerful a country will be.
