Summary Of The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall
One observation that I made in this weeks readings is the different emotional charge behind male characters towards towards female characters. In "The jilting of Granny Weatherall", Katherine Anne Porter develops Dr. Harry as a man who's emotions towards Granny Weatherall come out of sympathy for her misfortune as she drifts away in her hospital bed. Dr. Harry responds to his grouchy patient with, "Now, now, be a good girl, and we'll have you up in no time" (Porter 85). This overly sympathetic dialogue shows his light hardheartedness towards her at a time were he very well knows her state of health. In "My Grandmother's Love letters" by Hart Crane, the narrator's emotion towards his grandmother following are more so described as a joyful reminiscence.

    In "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," there are two themes. The first is self-pity. The second theme is the acceptance of her death. Both deal with the way people perceive their deaths and mortality in general. Granny Weatherall's behavior is Porter's tool for making these themes visible to the reader.
