This story is about a small village gathering on June 27 every year to host a lottery. No one knows why the village preserves the tradition, although the village elder claims it is a superstition for good harvest. The children collect rocks and pile them in the square. All the villagers gather in one place and a man named Mr. Summers, who runs the lottery, holds a black box. As he called all the names of the villagers, they will come up and grab a slip of paper. As everyone opens their paper, a woman named Tessie finds that her paper was the only one that contains a black dot, the symbol of death. The villagers then proceed stone her to death as she screams that it is not fair, because she did nothing wrong. This situation shows the grave injustice in the system which exists both in the fictional story and in the real
