Caw! Caw! In Evan Hunter’s screenplay, “The Birds,” Melanie Daniels
is being attacked by birds because she is a stranger to Bodega Bay.
This is because the birds do not start attacking until Melanie gets to Bodega Bay,
the birds target areas where Melanie is, and the birds attack people who Melanie
knows. To start with, the birds do not start attacking until Melanie gets to Bodega
Bay.

to Bodega Bay, due to the fact that the birds do not attack until she goes there to

All in all, the birds attack Melanie because the
attacks start right when she gets to Bodega Bay. The birds also target areas where
Melanie visits. Second of all, birds attack places where Melanie goes. The birds are going
to go after her no matter where she goes, so she does not want to leave Mitch’s
house because if the birds attack, she will protect Lydia and Cathy.4 When the
birds attack through the chimney, Melanie, “Swings the broom, covered with
birds” (Hunter #28). Melanie believes that if she protects Lydia and Cathy
from the birds, then Lydia will approve of her son dating her. The birds
also attack the diner area where Melanie goes for safety. Melanie flees
out of the diner and goes to a phone booth for safety, “she slams the door shut.
Gulls are now beating at the glass all around her” (Hunter #24). Melanie knows
that if she opens the door of the phone booth, that the birds will attack her, so she
does not open it for the man for her own safety.11 Finally, the birds go after the
