Summary Of The Notorious Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County
In “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and “How to tell a story” many different forms of humor are used in the stories. One example of humor is shown when the narrator overly exaggerates his description of Jim Smiley. He says that “ If he even see a straddle-bug start to go anywheres, he would bet you how long it would take him to get to, and if you took him up he would follow it all the way to Mexico.” The writer is using this to present a comedic tone to the audience to entertain them. In “How to tell a Story” Mark Twain explains humorous stories and how they grab the audience’s attention with jokes. Twain goes on to tell his own short story about a wounded soldier who was shot in the head, but his friend thought he was shot

There are many comparisons and contrasts between the play and the short story of Jim Smiley and The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain. For instance, in both play and story the events in happened in the exact same order. First, Jim Smiley is introduced and his character is developed when the narrator explains about his penchant for betting on anything and everything he sees. Then, a stranger comes to town and starts a bet with Jim Smiley that his frog is, in fact, not the best jumper in Calaveras County. Finally, in the end, the stranger cheats and angers Jim when he finds out he had been tricked. In spite of this, the play was different from the story because it did not have the framework that the short story had. In the play there was no part where they show the narrator trying to find out more about Leo. It goes straight to the story and does not add any outer frame; on the other hand, the short story adds other events…

Simon Wheeler is trying to get the narrator to listen to the story, but the narrator is thrown off guard and soon walks out. Twain uses vernacular diction in Wheelers’ vocabulary to indicate his character qualities. For Example, Wheeler says “Bananer”, this demonstrates the poor vocabulary Wheeler uses. Meaning to say “Banana” Wheeler adds the “-er” sounds to the endings of words, signaling he may have an accent.…

I believe that the varied, occasionally contradictory writing of American literature in the nineteenth century was a positive change. The broad range of viewpoints and perspectives that American Literature possessed at time gave its readers new ways of viewing and understanding different and or conflicting perspectives. The story’s “The School days of an Indian Girl” and “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras Bay” show the contrasting nature of American Literature at the time, as both are from wildly different perspectives and subjects. Firstly, the story “The School Days of an Indian Girl”, an autobiography essay written by Zitkala-Sa, takes on a tragic tone as the writer recounts her brutal treatment at a boarding school that illustrates…

It is such an influential force that in the essay “The Importance of Humor Research” is says that “chuckles occur much more frequently than other commonly researched emotions like regret, pride, and shame.” It is not shocking that humor would be more neglected than those other emotions. People tend to focus on the bad parts of humanity rather than the good things that come out of it. Humor is such an essential characteristic that Mark Twain wrote about it saying “the humorous story is strictly a work of art-high and delicate-and only an artist can tell it.” In the mid and late 1800’s there was proper and that was that. Humor was not a regular topic anywhere in the world at the time. The American people were still living much like the British at the…

An example when Alexie’s character, Jackson Jackson used humor in this story was when he was awoken from a drunken comma on the railroad tracks by a police officer. As Jackson wakes up he recognizes Officer Williams, a good white cop with a sweet tooth. “I am taking you over to detox,” Officer Williams said. “No man, that place is awful. It is full of drunken Indians.” They both laughed and drove off. “I do not know how you guys do it” he said. “What guys?” Jackson asked. “You Indians. How the hell you laugh so much? I just picked your ass off the railroad tracks, and you’re making jokes.” he said. Jackson replied, “The two funniest tribes i have ever been around are Indians and Jew, so I guess that says something about the inherent humor of genocide.” In this conversation Jackson uses humor to find laughter in a situation where Indian stereotypes say that all Indians are alcoholics. A further meaning to this is that Jackson uses humor to get past this situation. When compared to his life, multiple divorces, flunking out of college, and being a homeless alcoholic, shows his capability of moving on past events the way he laughed off the comment about drunken…

Some other comical factors is when reverend Parris has his tantrums but they aren’t even funny, because he is just lying to save his own reputation; ruining everyone else’s. Mrs. Putnam thinking Tituba had the power to allow her to communicate with her dead babies, could be considered funny. Other than she is dead serious, and assigns guilt ruthlessly. When mercy Lewis was caught dancing naked in the woods by Paris, would be funny except she lies compulsively and she condemned men and women to protect herself. There are a few comical moments in the book but over all this is a tragedy not a comedy.…
