Barry, Staples, and Cofer are just three of the essayists that we have read this semester that used the theme of stereotypes in their essays. In Staple's essay, “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Spaces”, he addresses the stereotypes placed on middle-aged black men. In Barry’s essay, “Turkeys in the Kitchen”, he mentions the stereotypes placed on men in today's society. In Cofer’s essay, “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria”, she talks about the stereotypes placed upon Latin and Hispanic women. These three authors mention how other people's quick judgments affect their everyday lives.…
It’s been over a decade since Nikki Giovanni wrote “Campus Racism 101,” but sadly the issues have not dissipated with time. In fact, these issues have evolved into something that affects all social groups; not just minority groups. While racism as a whole is still thriving, it has recently been accompanied by stereotypically induced prejudice; stereotypes are persistent in every social group. From stereotyped communities to minorities in collage and the campus itself, to hate crimes and television’s advertisement of stereotypes, it is obvious that Nikki Giovanni’s arguments are still very much valid and most importantly, ignored.…

Sometimes those factors can affect whether a child is doing well in school. Here in the United States, we, historically, have had countless instances, occurrences, and notable events related to racism, discrimination, slavery, and more. Social (and racial) relations in this nation have been constantly changing since the 16th century. In the decades after civil rights, however, these relations between people of different ethnic and racial backgrounds have improved significantly. In this paper, I will state my reaction on two videos, Eye of the Storm and A Class Divided. These videos are inspired from Jane Elliott, a third grade teacher, who tested a group of her students in teaching them about discrimination. The documentary “A Class Divided” is very eye opening into the world of racism and discrimination. The textbook Racial and Ethnic Groups defines racism as “a doctrine that one race is superior” and discrimination as “the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons” (Schaefer, pp. 14,41). The film’s set the tone for only being able to comprehend these concepts by truly “walking in their moccasins” as Ms. Elliot states. She was just an ordinary teacher that felt a mere discussion on these subjects just wasn’t enough in light of the times. The assisnation of Martin Luther King Jr. and the rising division of our nation by color demanded something else. This is when she decided to give a lesson based on blue eyes and brown eyes that would give rise to a microcosm society in her 3rd grade classroom (Frontline, 2003). Racial stereotypes and the effects on education remain a compelling concern. While similar pressures can be drawn between clique and racial stereotypes, racial stereotypes possess a variety of pressures and effects on education. People within a racial stereotype find themselves a part of that stereotype with no personal choice, whereas people determine if they want to include themselves in a clique.
