It is needless to say that women are beyond strong. We carry life within us and often are responsible for making sure that all aspects of life are where they should be. Women of past centuries had to deal so much turmoil and face so much adversity, especially women of color. The women who I would call my auntie or grandma are bursting with stories that help to explain why they are fearless. Gwendolyn Brooks is a woman who exemplifies class and fearlessness, and it is an honor to have researched her. In relation to class, she has the quick wit and way with words that we studied with Dorothy Parker, and gives off a maternal comfort that I felt when reading about Henrietta Lacks. She is the voice of the unconventional beauty who is brimming with personality who gets overlooked when it is time to choose a mate.
Her way with words makes the reader want to continue reading. She keeps her words simple and elegant while always making her point. Despite being a master of satire and form, rarely does the reader feel as though their intelligence is being challenged or disrespected. Her work is very political but never disrespectful. This put her around more like-minded and conscious individuals who immediately accepted her. There were times when the council served a social gathering and the conversations were ones that most young people have. They wanted to know who was pairing off with each, who could dance, and things of that purely innocent nature. The conversations that she had with the woman at the council didn’t have the same pushy feeling as she felt in high school. It was at this time that she felt as though she was having genuine girl talk.
