Image, the wee hours of the morning, a ship sinking and its crew abandoning the vessel in a lifeboat with only the thought of survival, unware of what dangers await them in the darkness of the sea. Ironically this is the grim reality of the men in the story The Open Boat written by Stephen Crane. What makes this story interesting is the fact that Crane was actually a passenger on the Commodore when it sank. During this time in American history it seems to be several shipwrecks along the coast of Florida. For the author he witnessed one of these disasters first hand. Therefore, Crane wrote The Open Boat based on his account of what happened on the fatefully morning when the steamer Commodore sank.…

As the chapter gets underway, Huck has to force Jim to keep his energy about him to find the robbers’ boat, while the robbers’ steal more money from the steamboat. Eventually, Huck finds their raft and tells a man on shore a story about the Walter Scott wreck. He includes some arbitrary details that aren’t exactly factual, like his family was stuck on the wreck. In Chapter 14, Huck and Jim start and finish by lying in the woods and resting from the busy day. Waiting for the sun to vanish, they start relaying stories about adventures. Huck even tells Jim about King Sollermun; the only king he’s heard of. Later on, the conversation switches to King Louis XVI. Lastly, Jim and Huck get in a quarrel about the English speaking French. Unfortunately…

    The Cay Book Vs Movie

“Like silent, hungry sharks that swim in the darkness of the sea, the German submarines arrived in the middle of the night” The movie never had this line in it. The movie starts on the boat and in the book it starts on the island where this line is. That's why I like the book better than the movie in The Cay by Theodore Taylor. When on the raft for the movie it skips a part of the story which makes Phillip and Timothy closer the part of the book when Phillip falls into the water and gets chased by sharks. The movie has much less detail. As well as this also, it doesn’t say that Philip was scared on the island before, or that by climbing the palm tree Phillip completes Timothy's survival course.…

Survival is a key part of life in which humans have been attending to throughout our entire existence. As time progresses, technology and knowledge not only increases but also improves. Eventually, we develop to the point where our educational system has an important and crucial question where the students are asked to compare and contrast a life raft with emergency supplies in it, a moderately sized island, and Earth itself. The three subjects have a number of similarities and differences; however, some are obviously more important than others.…

    The Raft In Huck Finn

As Huck and Jim journey down the Mississippi in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, their experiences differ on the raft rather than on shore, with everybody else. Although the raft is used to help navigate through the river, it is also a comfort zone for Huck and Jim. It’s as if it is their happy place. Jim uses the raft as an escape from segregation while Huck uses it as an escape from his father and the “sivilization”. When they are on the raft, Huck and Jim are isolated from society, but when they are not on the raft, they face the prejudices of white society. Huck and Jim treat the raft as a vehicle that eliminates all inequality going on in the real world. Since Jim is black, and Huck is white, it would be prohibited to even speak to each other in public, so the raft ensures their freedom on all levels. Being alone on the raft also separates them from everybody else; it is just the two of them, and they have nothing to worry about. In this quote, Huck describes the freedom and carefree life him and Jim have on the raft:…

Stephen Crane’s Open Boat is based on his own experience when he was shipwrecked off the coast of Florida. The story is famous for its philosophical theme of existentialism, powerfully evoked in the line” If I am going to drowned (repeated thrice), why in the name of the seven mad gods, who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and trees?” (Crane). This opens up an existential view of man’s place in the universe. Man is utterly insignificant and nature, with all its power, has no care for its individual existence. The line was therefore fitting for Billie, the oiler, who did not make it shore. From an existential point of view, one could argue that Billie was not claimed by death; rather he was not worthy to live. Seeing the fine line between death and existence, the survivors had gained an extraordinary experience that could only be brought out by such tragedy—where their life could hang in the balance. Thus, they could be interpreters of existence and it’s opposite. They have conquered death and they have proved to that all powerful nature that they deserve life, which Billie wasn’t able to.…
