In the novel The Secret River, one’s identity is based on their status. William Thornhill was born poor in Victorian London, but once he was sent to Australia he was equal to the rest the escapees, for he had a house and agriculture. He is able to acquire slaves, and he is respected by those around him. Once he gets back to England after living in Australia, he’s extremely rich. William Thornhill started in the lowest possible class in England, and moved up from that to one of the highest classes. When he came back to England, he was still held in high regard of because of his wealth.
