The name of this tale is The Story of an Hour, meaning that it only lasts 60 minutes. Time flies but many emotions and actions happen in this small amount of time. There are also less than 1000 words, but somehow it is about to have death and happiness all at once. In the story it says, “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease”(page 632) In this tale, the woman’s husband is dead and she becomes happy for a while but then at the end when he comes home. She gets overwhelmed, she was happy that he was gone rather than happy that he returned. It was hard to know what exactly she had done. During the Civil War, there was one battle that had many lives lost, this battle was called the Battle of Gettysburg. Adams said, “Casualties at Gettysburg totaled 23,049 for the Union... Some people will go their entire lives without truly knowing what it is like to be free. For this woman she is able to find what it feels like for about an hour, then passes. In the story she states, “Free! Body and soul free!’ She kept whispering,”(page 631) She repeated this statement multiple times, it was hard to realize that she was actually free and didn't have her horrible husband. There are others that felt this same way and they are called slaves. Even though Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, none of the slaves felt it.
