Summary Of The Story Sweat

The Story Sweat was really depressing to read and on top of that to defend the antagonist. For the early 1920’s the story shows that there is hope for women who are being domestically abused. I don’t know much about the statistics but I know that spousal abuse was one of the many reasons for the prohibition which was during this time. Something that really stood out to me the first time I was reading this story was that Delia was a working woman. She wasn’t a delicate flower stay at home mom, but she cleaned people’s clothes to earn her own money. Furthermore, what was even more surprising was that her husband was the one who was unemployed. I would hope that after reading the story at least a couple people thought when they know of someone going through abuse that is not right and that they should do something about it. When Sykes’ mistress is introduced into the story it really shows how much better Delia deserved. She provides everything for this ungrateful low life and he has the audacity to flaunt his new girl around town. Something like this shows men and women in that time period and even now that being your own homewrecker comes back to bite you in the end. There is always another option and what really gets me is why they never got divorced. I’m not just referencing the story but there are a lot of failing marriages and due to “what people think” couples stay “married” and ruin their lives along with their children’s lives because of society. I don’t think that divorce should be the first think a couple resorts to but after years of failure it should just happen. Delia later in the story faces even more torture by being stuck in the house with her worst nightmare. Not just talking about Sykes I’m talking about his pet
