Mountains Beyond Mountains summary
The award winning nonfiction biography by Tracy Kidder, gives the reader an encounter of the life of Paul Farmer, a doctor who travel the world in search of a cure to save people suffering from AIDS and Tuberculous in countries in poverty. The book is divided in to five sections, each section giving a different time an point of view of the over theme that all people even in poor nations should be given a chance to access the same health care. In section Part I Doktè Paul, the Haitian name for doctor, we are first introduced to Doctor Farmer and the type of man he is. The reader learn how caring and passionate he is for his patient’s
health and well-being. It starts off by describing Joe, a homeless man dealing with ADIS , who in which Farmer goes out his way to find him a shelter that fits his accommodations and even sneaking him a 6-pack of beer in to the homeless shelter as a Christmas gift to him. In Haiti, Farmer goes the extra mile literally by taking a trip to one of his patient home to check on him and make sure he was taking his medication. In this section, the reader also learns of Farmers program and who helps fund it and where the saying “mountains beyond mountains” comes from. Section Part II, The Tin Roofs of Cange is about the motivation of Farmers belief and background of his life. The reader learns of Farmer challenging childhood and how he overcame his struggle to become the man who would later help change many impoverish countries health care. Within this section describes Farmers love affair, the history of his education, his religious beliefs, who funds his organization, and how divided Haiti is socially among the rich and poor.
Overall explaining Haiti history past and present and how it would become the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
Section Part III Medicos Aventureros, reflects upon the rise of many harmful and deadly diseases and infection that would over the years eventually cover Haiti in a blanket. Among the disease are AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and how due to the large amount of malnutrition and poverty among the people contributes to this outbreak. It also describe how Farmer help cure many of the people dealing with TB in Haiti. The section overall show how TB is not just one country problem but a world health problem. That many countries such as Cuba, Peru, Haiti, USA and Russia all faced out breaks of TB. The section also refers to Farmer personal life and his wedding.
Section Part IV A Light Month For Travel, informs the reader more of Farmers personality as he travels to Cuba for a conferences and of the history of Cuba before and after the Cold War. In which Cuba who had been isolated from the world by the USA. Farmer also encounters a women name Peggy Mcavoy, who was the leader of the United Nation project on HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean island. Overall learning on way to improve not only the TB but also the people socially and economically in poor countries. Farmer also takes a trip to Russia which is also described in this section.
Section Part V,O for the P overall summarizes up the rest of the book, by gratifying farmers work.
