Summary Of Two Ways A Woman Can Get Hurt By Jean Kilbourne
“Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” by Jean Kilbourne in her essay she is talking about how media is poorly portraying the image of man and woman. It’s important to pay some attention to this type of situation where sexism has been spreading in media and there is no need for it, the commercial and ads can be done without using pornography. But the idea of sex sells has been driving crazy where people put the stuff out to get attention of others but this thinking is hurting men and women mentally and spreading negativity. It started with women and now mans are also treated as objects if someone want to get any type of attention they doesn’t have to put sexism in their commercials or photos they just have to describe how good their product is without

In the text “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt: Advertising and Violence”, Jean Kilbourne, an award winning author and educator who is internationally recognized for her innovative work on images of woman in advertising, argues how media images influence our interactions and shape our social reality. Kilbourne’s sensible analysis of these powerful and harmful advertisements lacks a simplistic cause and effect relationship between the way we act and the images presented to us. With an analytic investigation of Kilbourne’s text one can locate several solid examples where she explains the relationship between images and actions.…

It characterizes how women are portrayed as objects, not humans. This is represented by a series of advertisements focused on certain body parts, for instance, a woman’s legs or breasts, which apparently dehumanizes women. The issues related to the advertisements presented in this film include a major decline in self-esteem experienced by adolescent females, eating disorders, and violence against women, among other examples. As a result, Kilbourne immediately stresses her opinions that females are bombarded with a multiplicity of insecurities compared to males growing up. She blames this imbalance of self-esteem to the models that indirectly push women to look up to the unreachable ideal image portrayed in advertising. The result is damaging to our collective psychological makeup as far as the way we view women in the real world and how women view…

I watched Jeanne Kilborne's video speech, “Killing Us Softly.” The informative video expressed many themes of oppression against women in the media, making them seem inferior and seen as objects. First, she mentions and proves that women are demeaned sexually, physically and intellectually, a point that she talks about for a big chunk of time, you could say it’s the main point of her presentation. I definitely agree with this argument because we still see it now-a-days in burger ads, women and their bodies are used to sell their food. In New York, Times Square, all you see is women promoting things. I don’t agree with their use of advertising at all because it makes women seem more like things that are usable. Kilborne proves this by using…

Kilbourne’s major claim in “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” is that advertising has reached a point where bodies are portrayed as objects thereby normalizing attitudes that lead to sexual aggression. Right away the readers are able to trust and respect the word of the author because of the italicized introduction included prior to her actual argument. We learn that for the majority of Kilbourne’s career she trained and educated others in advertising, and right now is a professor at Wellesley College. “She has produced award-winning documentaries on images of women in ads (Killing Us Softly, Slim Hopes) and tobacco advertising (Pack of Lies)” (417). She was also part of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and as of today she works with the Massachusetts Governor’s Commission on Sexual and Domestic Abuse. With all this experience in the field of advertising and abuse, it becomes almost impossible to question Kilbourne’s credibility and therefore serving as the piece’s ethical appeal.…

The author’s main argument is that women should not be treated as objects. Kilbourne’s purpose is to show how women are being looked at in degrading ways, and how men in the ads are looked at as superior to women. She used one ad, “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt”, and it has a photo of a razor and a photo of a man. This ad is supposed to be promoting shaving gel and portray how the shaving gel is supposed to save her from the razor. In Kilbourne’s perspective, she feels the man in the ad is probably a date rapist. The purpose of Kilbourne talking about the man as a date rapist is to show that certain advertisements portray as a violent threat to women. I think this is the wrong way to describe an advertisement. Kilbourne’s essay has a lot of opinions and no facts, but it does not give her the right to degrade an ad. Explaining ads with a feminist attitude does not always prove a point. The author’s emotions about women in entertainment seem a little personal because she is a woman. She has logic with the statistics and facts, but she still puts a lot of emotion to what she wrote about. Kilbourne felt a personal feeling towards this problem we have in the world about how woman are portrayed in ads.…

In article “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt: Advertising and Violence,” Jean Kibourne argues that advertising encourages sexual and physical violence towards women. One example from her article that supported main argument well is the advertising about jeans. Jean discusses, “The ad that ran in the Czech version of Elle portraying three men attacking a woman seems unambiguous, the terrifying image is being used to sell jeans to women” (583). It a strong use of evidence for advertising encourages sexual and physical violence towards women because in the ad does not show any thing about jeans. Otherwise, on the image, there are three men attacking and having sexual abuse a woman. This ad will encourage men to aggressive towards woman, and let them…

It is without a doubt that advertisement surrounds one’s life on a daily basis. According to Consumer Reports Website, the average American is exposed to 247 commercial messages each day. In the book, “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt,” author Jean Kilbourne explains how society negatively portrays women and their “expected” lifestyle. The photographs in this selection shocked me by the method of choice used within different advertisements to catch the readers eyes. I noticed some advertisements displaying promiscuous women who use their bodies to attract attention. Also, I noticed photographs suggesting women are less superior to men. Kilbourne quotes, “It is more often about power than passion...” (240). This leads me to believe the target audiences of these pictures are men who would seemingly relate to the thought of men being more superior than woman. In addition, I notice pictures of children at young ages who are naked or revealing themselves in inappropriate seductive manners. I feel as though that is an unprofessional way to advertise products and I don’t understand how anyone could agree with such photos involving children. I think we still see this behavior today as men often convince themselves to believe they have more power over woman. The news previews football players beating their wives and pop singers beating their girlfriends, yet society almost expects this behavior and allows it to become a negative influence, believing it is okay to beat someone. Also, it is very common that children, who grew up in abusive homes, result in being abusive as an adult. Kilbourne suggests, “It is often about…violence than violens.”(240). Overall, Kilbourne educates me on the view of woman in society in the past and made me realize how the same issues are present in today’s world.…

Media has been the one to make these stigmas become real in our society’s minds. Media has given women the role as weak, emotional and codependent of men. Nowadays, females are being used to sell products by using their bodies or by performing sexual acts. Companies are persistent on selling their products by utilizing women’s “perfect” bodies and by sexualizing them. Media is the one to distribute to the world the image they have created among women and how powerful has men become over the other sex. With these ideas, women have had to live in a society that judges all the time, making them pursuit the image of a perfect body, which implies physical pain and damage, as well as psychological problems, healthy problems, economic issues, and even death. Kilbourne also states that these problems also lead to violence towards…

Women, beauty, sex, money--they may seem like completely unrelated words but when combined together create a powerful driving force within American society. This “driving force” is known as media, though, in this essay, I will be focusing mainly on advertisements. There are a variety of ads being made everyday and can be spotted almost everywhere; billboards, magazines, shops, and even online, just to name a few. However, many of these ads--ranging from food to fashion--have began involving women in them. Not just any women either; these women are the idealized women American society has conceptualized as they flaunt their bodies whilst also implying sexual themes. Individuals, literally and figurative, by into the way these advertisements…
